I think it's fair to say that with the odd notable exception DC has been more successful with it's animated features than it's live action ones. Mind you, from my experience they have been pretty straightforward renditions of the stories.
What we have here is a very different kettle of fish, when compared to both DC animation and Marvel live-action movies. And it's better than both.
Rather than just being a story that could easily have been told in live action, it embraces it's origins and lavishes on the comic book stylings to give us something that could not have been rendered in any other way.
And that makes it far more watchable, far more enjoyable than the increasingly bloated offerings from the Marvel cash factory that can now put anything out and have people flocking to it regardless of quality. Incredibly this film took less at the American box office than Venom.
And the fact that it is animated means that you don't get that awkward clash of humans acting against CGI creations which I find to be a constant distraction. This means that they can present characters like Kingpin as he is in the comics, someone who is literally larger than life, without it feeling odd (well, not too odd).
What's more it looks gorgeous.
While all the other Marvel movies just feel like they're more of the same, although judging from the numbers that's exactly what people want, this is very much not, it's a breath of fresh air and makes me think that perhaps superhero stories are much better off being told through the medium of animation.
