Inside No. 9: The Party's Over 2024
'Plodding On', Series 1? Many a truth spoken in jest. I certainly hope so.
I've followed Steve and Reece's careers closely since 'On the Town with the League of Gentlemen' first aired on Radio 4, in 1997. 'Inside No. 9' is certainly one of the most remarkable televisual achievements of the 21st century thus far. I don't need to explain why - you already know. I look forward to their next projects with huge enthusiasm.
Nicely paced, thoughtful film, with the number of talking heads, thankfully, kept to a minimum.

Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl 2024
I hadn't thought about the absence of Peter Sallis until I started watching. For me, that absence became conspicuous. But perhaps it was the film overall, which I felt played like a tribute to former triumphs, rather than a riveting new tale full of fresh ideas.

The Straight Story 1999
One of the most beautifully realised and humane visions I've encountered on screen. The peformances are outstanding - especially of course 'Alvin' himself (the late, great Richard Farnsworth), and the cinematography alone deserves a medal for services to humanity. The all-pervading sense of both the value of reconciliation and the enduring nature of love are captured like very few films I've seen. Profound. Bravo, Mr Lynch.

Hell on Earth: The Desecration & Resurrection of The Devils 2002
Favourite quote - Dudley Sutton on film censors: "Well, they’re just a bunch of cunts, aren’t they? They can’t take the pace."
Gigantically brilliant film, absorbing documentary. It's impossible to underestimate the scale of Ken Russell's ambition in making this movie in the early 70s. The story of its reputation and of its censorship will no doubt rumble on forever.
