A remarkable accomplishment, if shorn of all political context.
I have no problem with its artificiality. No film - movie, documentary, imaginative reconstruction - is 'real'.
Jackson's film, no less than anyone else's, is a vehicle for conveying ideas. I don't think it improves our understanding of the First World War, but, on its own terms, it's (mostly) successful.
And it doesn't 'alf pack an emotional punch.
