(+) sound design was other-worldly
(+) sound effects, i could still hear them while walking out
(+) soundtrack, is its own thing...
(+) cinematography/compositions were beautiful
(+) my eyes were looking everywhere throughout (i love it)
(+) usage of lighting, was beautiful
(+) colour grading, showed a sense of personality
(+) editing, splicing with subtleties, it's really well-done
(+) pacing, starts out slowly but ramps up; by it's end, you are left wondering ok wtf, how tf?
(+) everything, worked in tandem/cohesively. i love it!!
actors
(+++) Maika Monroe gives an outstanding performance! it would not have given the same aura if it weren't for her
(++) Nic Cage, do we need to say more? in recent years, he has chosen great roles and this didn't disappoint
(+) supporting cast, did well
thematic
(+) investigative horror thriller (strong Alan Wake II vibes)
(+) consistently unsettling throughout
(+) subtle references were made and appreciated
(+) provides FBI investigations mixed with the occult; utilising it to its fullest potential
the reason why this was sought after, was it's unrestrained commitment to provide an unnerving film. with almost everything falling into place, the only fault was my ass leaving to exit the cinema.
throughout, it encompassed atmosphere, beautiful cinematography, consistent vibe, competent/smart characters alongside well-written dialogues.
just hope that this (and The First Omen), would encourage directors and companies to notice the hunger for horror films to treat audiences with respect.
so obviously, this was one of the better one in years. held up to the expectations shouted from everywhere while standing strong by its own. per tradition, don't tune into any trailers. i went in blind and i love it.
