JUNIMATION II: F*** YEAH!
For a film that was seen as a holdover, a second-rate film for the Disney overlords, apparently no one told Hans Zimmer that. Also, it's kind of funny that the two times Zimmer has won an Oscar, they both had someone chanting and yelling. Maybe he should incorporate more of that into his music. Also, was it me or those giraffes during the opening who looked kinda pissed? Clearly, none of those animals wanted to go to that ceremony.
But seriously, this was and still remains a true banger. Everything here—every scene, every song—is iconic. Whether it’s the opening, the elephant cemetery, the heartbreaking death scene, and what follows, the “Hakuna Matata” or “Be Prepared” number (though I still personally liked the version on the remake; I wish it was longer though), the characters are all incredible. Mufasa, Simba, and Scar are such devilish villains with their sarcasm, and Irons’ voice just elevates the material, and the same can be said of James Earl Jones, whose voice is powerful and commanding, one of the greatest voices in cinema. The cinematography is top-tier in the Disney catalog, both within and outside of their animation work. It is also easily one of the best Shakespeare adaptations.
All in all, a brilliant film from beginning to end with such a sweeping, moving score, incredible characters, and a timeless story.
