Rafael "Parker!!" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
Four eyes. FOUR EYES! The man had four eyes and still couldn’t read the goddamn warnings?!
Fede Alvarez's remake of the horror classic pays a lovely tribute to the original, invoking a wink to the over-the-top humor in the dialogue and Mickey mousing in the score as well as the use of crash zooms. But at the same time the movie takes a great decision by emphasizing the horror elements with its gore and the word "bloodbath" taken to a whole new level. Possibly one of the best movie endings ever made in a horror film is delivered by excellent carnage.
Like the original, most of the supporting cast is merely there to advance the plot for the most part, especially the blonde chicks. It's their possessed sequences that really stand out, with the one with Olivia and the blonde chick being one of my favorite scenes.
If I were to change anything, I would probably abandon the opening and focus more on the drug issue, maybe tricking audiences to believe the movie is no longer about possession and it was a disease. Like a “Cabin Fever” before pulling the rug out and showing this is indeed an “Evil Dead” film at the end.
All in all, those seeking for a deep and thoughtful horror film will be disappointed, but those hoping for some intoxicating carnage will have the time of their lives.
