Evil Dead

"Dying wouldn't be so bad right now. I just don't want to become the devil's bitch."

I'd say Eric is the fucking worst, but he gets absolutely wrecked, and I feel bad for him. When this came out, there were horror remakes after horror remakes flooding the market. Banking on name recognition and a younger generation wanting to buy in. There were a few gems, but most of them were soulless cash grabs. When this was announced, I didn't want anything to do with it. Didn't follow its production and ignored the marketing. When it hit theaters, I didn't go... until a few weeks later, and one boring afternoon came along. I gave in and am so glad that I did. It's the best remake of that era and just a fantastic horror movie in general. This isn't fucking around. It takes the original ingredients and bakes them in a different mold, and it never feels like fan service. I think the angle of making it about a junkie detoxing was great because it gives a plausible deniability cover to explain the outbursts before everyone realizes something really wrong is happening. It has a great pace. Once everything starts up, this grabs you by the hair and drags you for the rest of the movie. Jane Levy absolutely kills it in this movie, and it is staggeringly stupid that she isn't a big-name star. Everybody gets destroyed in this, but she goes through the worst of it. Then all the makeup and the wide range of performances she gives, she earned her paycheck with this one. This movie asks a lot of its performers, and they are all great at it. And the production value goes all out. The gore is nuts, and the sound effects make it even more disgusting. I love the focus on practical effects and makeup with CGI touch-ups. I really think that is the best way. The violence is harsh and not for the faint of heart. This one made me wince a few times. The camerawork is impeccable and reminiscent of Raimi, and the editing is clever and helps keep everything feeling disjointed. Lastly, one of the greatest post-credit scenes ever. Groovy.
