The Killing of a Chinese Bookie 1976
didn’t get this one at all at first but found it surprisingly cozy on rewatch. love hanging out with ben gazzara in this, just a smooth talking kind of skeezy but ultimately pretty chill guy who will often sadly order a drink and smoke a cig to sad jazz at any and all hours of the day, but at his heart he just loves his shitty ass nightclub and watching all his weird ass friends do long meandering 1890s vaudeville…

La Chimera 2023
beautifully shot, and lots of great individual performances, scenes, moments, concepts, etc., but amounts to absolutely nothing interesting at the end of the day. kept waiting around for it to go somewhere, and felt smacked in the face by the daunting realization that it seems to be going for a deep study of its incredibly boring protagonist, tampered down by a performance that is about one thousand times shittier than everyone else in the movie. long time matt slevin followers…

Civil War 2024
actually does a lot well, but its insistence on somehow remaining apolitical even as the characters follow an armed militia into the white house is baffling, becomes increasingly ridiculous and makes the whole thing ring hollow. its understanding of journalists as objective recorders is a complete dead end for the interesting questions about image that it raises, and that obviously dumb conclusion is also completely undercut by the depth of the two lead performances, which desperately deserved a better screenplay. better than I was expecting but a mid affair nonetheless.
