A deliberately and carefully paced horror thriller that is much better at creating a nightmarish atmosphere than a questionable twisty plot. The film visually and nicely establishes two time periods with a grainy and rounded home movie block center frame to show the past in 1970s Oregon, which then expands to full widescreen for the current timeline in the 1990s.
It features a strong performance by Maika Monroe as an FBI agent who is a little bit clairvoyant and a lot more antisocial.
So Nicholas Cage is in this movie? Don’t know how long it took me to realize it was him underneath that crazy sinister makeup but it’s certainly effective.
While there may not be a completely logical summary for what happens, this is all perfectly takes place in a world of emptiness and dread that is appropriately unsettling.
Except for Barbie, dolls have to be one of the creepiest things in movies next to clowns.
And beware if your birthday is ion the 14th.
