Atmosphere, baby. It’s horrifying and hard to watch at times, but there’s an excitement brewing in each reveal of whomever and whatever the hell Nicolas Cage’s Longlegs is. He’s unpredictably scary, with so many cringe and goofy moments sprinkled in that you’re never quite sure whether to take your foot off the brakes of your fear car. It’s like having a strict parent with a dry sense of humor. You’ll never know if he/she is actually mad at you until it’s too late. There are too Cage jump-scares that will shock the crap out of you, whether you’re high, stone cold sober, or hard to actually scare because you have steel guts. They got me, and I haven’t really been scared by a movie since seeing The Blair Witch Project for the first time. That said, this does rely on atmosphere a bit too much for its own good, we keep building to a third act that actually has its backbone in exposition and ambiguity. It’s a bit annoying for me since the film wants you to search for answers with the protagonist; there’s clearly a mystery here, besides a big baddie killing innocents, we want to know the motive and lore behind the killer. We sort of find out, but we also don’t really get what we came for. Definitely want to check it out again though, if not for how pretty some fall/winter weather shots look alone.
