Wow, already a contender for the worst film watched in 2025! Okay yes, it's partly my expectations, thinking this would be a documentary about art, or at least to have some kind of information. Instead I watched an unbearable slideshow presentation of famous artworks made 3D.
Better Man 2024

Yes, the epic musical numbers and big creative swings do elevate this story beyond the standard music biopic. But I didn't think it pulled off the ending, being too rushed and the redemption felt unearned. I also hated several moments including the big fight, and I had a nap during the lake scene. Mixed, so mixed.

Nicely atmospheric, everything looks great (apart from that moustache) but I struggled to feel the horror and tension and stakes (not a pun). But then I'm never fully convinced by Eggers' films. They are always technically brilliant and visually immersive but that's where it stops for me. And yet every new film of his I'm foolishly expecting connection. Still, I did love the sequence of Nosferatu's silhouette slipping over the shadows on the walls. And that shuddering whole-body sucking noise…

Yep, the perfect film to be my final of the year. And such a good choice to see it at the Astor, the only theatre that could match the vibe. Swooningly gorgeous. I found myself salivating over every design element, even the floral arrangements. A stunning film from start to finish. I love Alma. I even broke cinema protocol to whisper that at one point.
Oh, and that achingly slow zoom, from the wide shot that includes the dress to just them on the chaise lounge? I don't think I breathed during any of that. I was too focussed on absorbing everything single meaningful second.
