Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow was still a wide eyed star and Michael Douglas was the romantic or creepy lead in just about every second film? This is one of the better ones and the icing on the cake is a young morally dubious Viggo Mortensen.

What a hoot! Like The Substance if it was a student film. You have to be prepared to go for a ride with Glowicki’s particularly broad and irreverent humour and you’ll be disappointed if you expect high production values or nuanced acting.
With the opening frame, you think this film is going to be about dispossessed children but by the closing credits, you know it is about hanging onto hope where everything is hopeless. I love the way the story weaves between three fascinating women, all in a similar situation in Tunisia but with different motivations and different ideas of their futures. It comments on the role that religion plays, and shows a Tunisia that before now wouldn’t have felt quite so much like current day USA. In white countries, the darkness of your skin can always be weaponised.
