I think you either get it or you don't. I don't mean that as an insult or a judgement, I mean more in terms of a gutpunch feeling. This is not just even queerness, but about being trans and gender diverse, the feeling of not belonging in your self, in your being. And finding yourself through television. For the characters of TV Glow, it's the Buffy-esque Pink Opaque. For me, it was the Muppets and Doctor Who. Most of my…

The Script 2023
In which a film designed to provoke discussion about gender causes me to go on a long, personal detour about my relationship with my gender identity and my name.
A bold and thought provoking short about the gender clinic and the way trans people have to shave off nuances of their gender expression in order to get what they want. It's a film about medical assumptions but also about our limited ways of understanding transition and gender diversity. Cleverly, it…

Shredder Orpheus 1990
A neon infused skateboarding take on Orpheus and Eurydice sounds like something I really should love, but sadly I found this a bit of a snooze. Young Einstein 1988
A very silly comedy with a very convoluted premise. Yahoo Serious playing Einstein as a gifted idiot in Tasmania is such a weird, random idea it almost works. Found the first section the most interesting, contrasting Einstein with the Australian surrounds and farmlife. Once he gets to the city, this devolves into a complicated plot which never goes anywhere very fun (and has another underwritten female love interest). Great soundtrack of Aussie rock hits (newfound appreciation for Icehouse's 'Great Southern…

Please Baby Please 2022
Cannot be objective about Please Baby Please, a film so firmly and wonderfully my shit. Colourful, arch, intensely homoerotic study of masculinity and gender in conversation with decades of queer art (Brando, porno theaters, Physique magazines, Kenneth Anger, drag and so many others).
Andrea Riseborough is a force, commanding every delirious moment. Every choice she makes is insane, playing to the hilt, chewing scenery at every opportunity, making a meal out of camp dialogue but also staggeringly vulnerable when she…
