#4 of my early-2024 rewatches

Happy December all!
When i first saw Longlegs i thought it was awesome and was one of my faves of the year. I was surprised to see that it got somewhat mixed reviews. Part of that could be due to the marketing, which while creative and very fun, definitely made the movie seem scarier than it was (see also Barbarian and the Paranormal Activity movies). On rewatch i found i still generally loved it and still think its one of my faves of 2024.
Longlegs has some incredible atmosphere.
While not necessarily the scariest movie of the year, it masterfully creates a constant, uneasy sense of dread or menace through the whole film. The muted colours in the winter environment really helped this. Technically its just amazing, with fantastic cinematography, music, sound design and lighting. The sense of tension throughout is palpable, and it builds this gross unsettling feeling until the very end. I enjoyed all the homage to Silence of the Lambs, Seven and movies like them. Despite not really being what id call a horror movie, there are a couple great scares throughout with a great one in a forest cabin near the beginning. A common criticism ive seen has been the ending has too much exposition through narration and a i somewhat agree but I also at least liked that it showed good visuals while it was happening to make up for it. Maika Monroe continues to be an amazing scream queen while also being great as a mousy, hyper focused detective. Nic Cage gives a terrifying performance, while also keeping Cages classic style (which if youre not into, you probably wont like parts of this movie). I liked the supernatural stuff but some people may be put off by that, personally i thought it made the movie cooler.
Overall, Longlegs was still awesome and I think its a bit underrated to be honest. It was super rewarding on rewatch to catch things i missed or were hidden the first time. One moment in particular was very chilling that I didnt notice it before, and i love movies that reward multiple viewings. Highly recommend!
Next: Alien Romulus
