Me after Oppenheimer
A magnificent, hair-raising reminder that our days as a species are numbered. There is so much complexity to navigate in this singularly momentous chapter of human history that it makes what Christopher Nolan accomplishes all the more impressive. Nolan's epic is achieved with a fleet of actors boasting a handful of Oscar-worthy showstoppers, a script with enough haunting instances to leave scorch marks in its observers, and a spectacular score (one that I'm listening to as write this, in fact) that serves as the propulsive current running through and connecting every one of the film's atoms.
The ordinary biopic approach simply would not do for a figure as uniquely impactful as J. Robert Oppenheimer and that makes the way this film is pristinely crafted rarely feel like anything other than a grand, grimly sober entertainment. The harrowing truth of it all is the only gravity that it needs to shake your soul. And the combined effect of it all gave me the kinds of chills I rarely get at the theater. I'll be thinking about it for some time.
Notes:
- I almost resisted the urge to say it but I have to: this movie blew my mind 🤯. On a related note, the fact that this otherwise harmless emoji 🤯 has a mushroom cloud is absolutely WILD.
- On a more serious note, it's unforgivable that this film doesn't even slightly acknowledge the Hispanic and indigenous people who were affected by the testing done by the Manhattan Project. Read the full story here.
