I remember seeing the non-stop adverts for this when it came out and saying...I will never watch this, yet here I am. I do really like Emma Stone and this did win several Academy Awards so I felt like giving it a try seemed appropriate. It definitely does have what I feared...people breaking out into song constantly for no reason. I really disliked the first musical number (the traffic one) and I was scared this was going to be a High School Musical type thing. Luckily for me, it dove into throwback of the original classic musical type numbers that were so much better (coulda done without the John Legend performance too). There were moments of artistry and visually pleasing cinematography as well and occasionally it veers into spectacle. Stone plays an aspiring actress Mia Dolan trying to make it big in Los Angeles despite slinging java for money. Ryan Gosling is Seb Wilder is a jazz musician who plays in bars and in an '80s cover band. He thoroughly frustrates her and of course they are alternately romantically entangled. Emma Stone was delightful and charismatic, she really made the film, and the chemistry between the characters did feel real. The story is decent enough for a romantic musical, I can see why so many adore this and it was a fun movie in many ways.
