It's my third time watching La La Land and it's always hard for me to put into words how much this film impacts me. It overflows me with emotion and it gets more intense with each watch since I already know how everything is going to pan out. It's a piece of cinema you can tell pays a lot of attention to how details of the plot and the background connect to the message of the film, the characters and their journey. It's also a real treat to rewatch to capture those small things that may go unnoticed on a first watch and the delicate references to what films inspired this modern masterpiece and Damien Chazelle's vision of La La Land.
Visually, it's a film that is very much appealing to look at given its vibrant colors that pop out from the screen and the captivating way everything is filmed and every feeling is captured. Damien Chazelle had already done an excellent work on Whiplash at causing anxiety and tension and here in La La Land he elevated that same work to a whole new level exploring the intricacy of love and dreams and how sometimes not everything that is good or great is meant to be. The sountrack is breathtaking and just another layer that helped setting the magical environment this beautiful and heartbreaking musical is built upon. Justin Hurwitz did a wonderful job, it's one of my favorite soundtracks of all time and one I, from time to time, find myself relistening to to dive into this dreamers' world once again.
The ending is nothing but perfection on tape. I can't point a single thing out in that sequence that I didn't fall in love with. It was a risk going from the conventional ending and what a lot of people must've thought was going to happen, but I think it heavily payed off as it made the film even more memorable.
In short, La La Land is art and a film I will never get tired of as I always end it wanting to watch it once again.
