  opens with a chilling scene in which Rocky realizes he probably has irreversible brain damage. then it settles in to a nice, boring, nostalgic recapitulation of his magnanimity and righteous pride, spiced up with a borderline racist and not particularly clever Don King takeoff. perhaps the saddest and most affecting story here is that both of Rocky's sons here, real and surrogate, got into trouble and died too young in real life.

  Here it is, the Rocky movie that to most people is known rather as the skid mark of the franchise, a piece of lonely shit, the movie nobody likes or one of the worst movies of all time. Now I fully understand why most people dislike this movie, the new soundtrack, the fighter, Tony Ever's and well mainly because they wanted to take the franchise in a new direction and to be honest I liked that about this movie, it wasn't predictable or repeating the same thing (no offence at all to the other Rocky movies) Stallone…

  So funny that this was meant to be a back-to-street-level basics recalibration for this franchise and it's arguably even more of a cartoon than IV in terms of the writing and performing of its drama, it's just also scaled down in terms of style to try and match the original in a way that makes it the worst of both worlds. I'll take the absurd, egotistical, experimental MTV direction Stallone was seemingly headed in over this any day.

  I really like the first 10 minutes. Rocky needing to face the reality of his situation— his physical and mental health. And then it all derails with the decision to make him poor again. Not that it’s unbelievable Paulie would do something that stupid, but for someone as humble as Rocky, its not like he needed a reminder to remember his roots. 

  So yeah, movie still sucks but also maybe we can’t hate it too much? The loss of his lavish lifestyle results in the opening of Adrian’s, inadvertently leading to a nice arch in Rocky Balboa and subsequently Creed. But I guess if Stallone himself gives the movie a 0 out of 10, I don’t feel bad giving it a 2.

  Fight! - Stallone v. Schwarzenegger: A Rivalry of Muscular Proportions

  Rocky, the franchise that survived the 70s, the 80s, the 00s and the 10s... but wasn’t rad enough to handle the 90s.

  I knew coming in this was the worst of the franchise, but I still went in open-minded, hoping people were overreacting…

  And I mean, the sound design and editing in that match scene with Tommy on the ring with him beating the dude in the ring as it flash cuts to Rocky hitting the bag was cool, especially when seeing it with some great earphones. I felt every single punch, they gave me goosebumps. Unsurprisingly, the chemistry between real father and son was really great, though his storyline…

  No wonder this Rocky is acting a little strange, it’s Rocky Raccoon not Rocky Balboa. But seriously, what did they cook up in the writing rooms this is hot garbage; some decent cinematography but it’s a story I do not enjoy, nor does it make much sense and knowing the fact this was supposed to be the fifth and final in the series, well maybe Rocky did get hit a few too many times. 

  George Washington Duke is a decent new addition, some great costume design and he does enough to make me dislike the character, that goes for Tommy Gunn also. It makes sense when reading up that he isn’t an actor because he was…
