Synopsis
If life isn't kicking your ass, it's not doing its job.
Andy Goodrich's life is upended when his wife enters a rehab program, leaving him on his own with their young kids. Goodrich leans on his daughter from his first marriage, Grace, as he ultimately evolves into the father Grace never had.

The absolute epitome of what another critic I know refers to as “gas leak cinema,” Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s sweetly deranged “Home Again” — starring Reese Witherspoon as a single mom who invites three cute and aspiring young filmmakers to stay in the guest house of her palatial Brentwood home — is the kind of rom-com that feels like it was made by aliens whose only exposure to our species was an intercepted satellite feed of the Hallmark Channel. Everyone is beautiful, no one’s decisions make sense, and the only remotely pressing conflict is whether Reese’s new houseguests will be able to attend her daughter’s school play (they’re scheduled to meet with a financier at the same time, the perfect subplot for…

Milestone - 7600th movie watched
An engaging enough family drama when it isn't drowning in a saccharine based pool of obscene levels. Everyone talks, thinks, and acts like they know they are in a movie, and it becomes tiresome quite a bit. However, the likeability of stars Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis make up for that, even if I never fully believed their relationship or anyone else's in this movie for that matter. I liked it, but this is one family I won't be spending any more time with.

If you say Goodrich 3 times he’ll appear and be an absent father to you
-
how did he get in-n-out for his kids at 8am tho

Goodrich is a reminder of the blessing that is Michael Keaton as both a dramatic and comedic actor. The film is a gift to him that reminds us how good he's been all these years. And its fun to think he more-or-less started with Mr. Mom and he gets to play in the same sandbox all these years later.
The film stars Keaton as an older man with a pregnant daughter (Mila Kunis) from one marriage and nine year old twins from his second. When their mom puts herself into rehab, he has to adjust his busy life running an art gallery to become, yes, Mr. Mom all over again... plus a timer before he becomes Mr. Grandma. The film…

I went into Goodrich with low expectations, expecting not to like it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it somewhat enjoyable. The film features solid performances, particularly from Michael Keaton, who portrays the titular character with nuance and depth. It's a familiar story—an absent father attempting to redeem himself and reconnect with his family—but the execution makes it work for the most part. While it doesn’t break new ground or stray far from the genre’s conventions, it balances humor and heartfelt moments fairly well.
That said, I didn’t feel a strong emotional connection to the movie overall. It has its moments, but they didn’t resonate deeply with me. The predictable narrative and occasional heavy-handedness held it back from being truly impactful. Still, the performances and earnestness elevate it beyond mediocrity, making it a decent and watchable film. If you enjoy redemption stories or are a fan of Keaton, it might be worth checking out, but it’s not essential viewing.

Micheal Keaton flexes the hell out of both his comedic and dramatic muscles, gives one of my favorite performances of 2024. Too bad absolutely nobody saw it.
Provided plenty of chuckles.
Great supporting effort from Mila Kunis. She flat out kills a scene late in the film where years of hurt spill out of her.
Got the tears outta me We Live in Time failed to.
And Vivien Lyra Blair proves Obi-Wan was just a fluke, she's actually a really good little actress.

“My husband is a gay.”
“What do you mean your husband is a gay?”
A 3.5 Letterboxd friends, that’s as low as I’m willing to let you go on this one. Goodrich, written and directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer, is likely the most underrated, underseen film of the year. It’s a feel-good dramedy about a man (Michael Keaton) managing a series of hardships. With a fantastic cast and equally excellent script, this film is an absolute must watch.
I love Keaton. He’s one of my favorite actors and that’s because he’s one of the most reliable actors out there. If you want a banger performance, hire Keaton. He is fabulous in this film, nailing both the comedy and drama as an…

-If life isn't kicking your ass, it's not doing its job.
Goodrich may start as a story in which we tend to believe the main character has seen it coming (as a consequence of being too self-absorbed with his work), but Hallie Meyers-Shyer's flair for writing authentic moments elevated the movie to compassionate territories.
To the risk of repeating myself, the script really helped humanize and rationalize the absence of Andy Goodrich — and to counter this lack of balance — Michael Keaton brought out his A-Game to fill out the shoes of a Father who's picking up the pieces when things fall apart.
I consider the pacing of this film nearly perfect. Every moment, big…

What a fantastic year Michael Keaton has been having. First a solid second directorial attempt, then reprising one of his beloved character once again with a bang and now a Oscar worthy performance, yes I’m serious this is Keaton’s best performance since Birdman or Spotlight, probably better than those films.
I’m a big sucker for films that make me feel good, emotional and gives me a warm hug. Goodrich was the film I badly needed in my life. It’s sweet, innocent, funny, heartfelt and heartbreaking. The story is pretty simple but the way it unfolds with joy and life is what makes this film beautiful. The characters in this film were amazing, everyone contributed something lovely and profound both to…

A good little LA life-adjacent indie about a man losing steam in his second go-around as a father, with dwindling energy to devote to the daily grind which has been taking up most of his time in his second marriage. Another shot at domestic bliss that likely once gave him a new lease on life now has its real rent due.
After his current wife leaves him to occupy the full capacity of the household labour and childcare, he reaches out to the pregnant adult daughter from his first go-around for help, and the two begin to uneasily bond in a different fashion than how and when they should have in childhood - and that's okay. That true connection is…

Goodrich is the kinda family drama where every technical side is mediocre and the good music and performance just don’t let the whole movie to be a mediocre.
Keaton is amazing in this ‘as always’ which raises the movie’s bar. Nice and sweet music too.
