  M here again. As you were. Goldfinger is probably the most definitive Bond Film in how it epitomizes what the series would become for a long while. All of the tropes are in full effect; its campier, the puns are free-flowing, the musical accompaniment is perfected, the locations are diverse and the villains are as gimmicky as they come. It is one of if not my favorite mission and each scene feels like visiting an old friend. Here is my mission debriefing.

  It makes sense why so many know this as the Ultimate Bond Formula, whether in terms of iconography, pacing, and the many other puzzle pieces that make up a movie like this, and it's practically a highlight reel for the first thirty minutes, but it's all surface. So much of what makes James Bond, as a character and as a series, interesting is lacking. What is traditionally fun about it is here in multitudes, of course, from the ingenious stealth opening to the memorable villains and the Bond Girls, but it's really all fluff. I'd watch it again in a heartbeat, and yet, there are weirder, more entertaining Bonds that linger.

  GOOOOLD FINGAAAAA!

  The third entry in the Bond franchise will forever be its most iconic.

  From the the title sequence to the villain and Pussy Galore, it really is the quintessential Bond in so many ways.

  This is also the first film they get the banter with Q totally right. He does make an appearance in From Russia With Love, but it is mostly expositional. This is the first time they have the banter between him and Bond ("Now pay attention 007!") and the first time he shows around his facilities and other products he's working on. Those scenes are always a highlight for me.

  First time seeing this on 35mm.

  Many before me have noted that Bond doesn't actually do much in this one ("Except rape that lady!" points out my girlfriend), but while the script is generally expository stalling the whole thing burns style like rocket fuel. This franchise can do (and has done) far worse than such an iconic delivery device for the combined efforts of John Barry and Ken Adam, although despite having seen this dozens of times I still fail to understand its popularity above FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE or the far more outlandishly exciting and technically accomplished YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE.

  Goldfinger is only the third Bond in the franchise, and yet it's already developed the Bond's signatures so well that it feels like they've been around forever. It's one of the earliest installments in the series, and yet it's also one of the most definitive and memorable. It has some of the series's greatest moments: one of the greatest themes, one (two?) of the greatest villains, and one of the greatest Q Branch scenes (along with some of the best gadgets, including the introduction of the Aston Martin). And with a name like Pussy Galore there won't be any forgetting Goldfinger's Bond Girl.

  Probably the most sheer fun of the Connery films, but it has one big problem (which I assume derives from the novel): Bond gets captured at roughly the midpoint and remains a prisoner for the rest of the movie. And not in an exciting way, either—he makes one attempt to escape, but that's really just a means of allowing him to overhear Goldfinger's diabolical plan, which ultimately gets foiled less by Bond himself than by Bond's surfeit of testosterone.
