Crimson Peak

Crimson Peak

Edith is a young woman looking to become an author. After the arrival of a mysterious lover her father passes away tragically leaving her alone. So she goes home with the man to his estate in England. A tremendous old house in a state of utter disrepair. A house that breathes. A house that bleeds. With a man who may have sinister motives.

This may come as a surprise, but I'm not a huge fan of Guillermo del Toro's work. Admittedly there is still a lot I haven't seen, so I try to sprinkle one in from time to time in hopes that my opinion will change for the better. I'm a sucker for supernatural horror, especially the haunted house variety, so popping in Crimson Peak seemed like a no brainer. Fuck am I glad I chose correctly.

As far as production values go, everything about this film is beautifully crafted from the outfits to the set design and the cinematography is top notch. The ghosts look great and the gore scenes, though few, looked awesome too. The plot, well, that's fucking tremendous too. When you combine that level of production with an excellent cast and original/interesting plot involving love, deceit, the supernatural, conspiracy, and you give it a beautifully horrible backdrop you have everything set in place for a masterpiece. Even the ending was perfect, as I kind of thought about it by the halfway point but figured it wouldn't be the case. I won't spoil it so make sure to watch the first few minutes of the outro credits and you'll see what I mean.

Crimson Peak did what I was hoping it would do. It didn't quite give me the haunted house experience I was expecting but it went above and beyond in pretty much every other way. Consider me a fan. A Guillermo del Toro fan. Crimson Peak RULES!

Bonus: The immortal Doug Jones is in this film. Try to spot him.
