Guillermo del Toro's misunderstood, misadvertized masterpiece remains a tremendous piece of Gothic romance. An outstanding cast, a compelling and well crafted story and lush atmospheric visuals and setpieces make for a gorgeous and yet haunting film in which, as always with Del Toro, the true horrors remain pure and deeply human. Human and alive. In the end, love makes monsters of us all.
