One of the many dumb rules I give myself when it comes to my Letterboxd is that I have to watch a film twice before giving it all five stars.

Today I am breaking that rule, because Fail Safe is flat out one of the greatest pieces of storytelling I have ever beared witness to. Holy fucking shit.

At an appropriate time, I would very much be into another limited series adaptation, preferably on HBO. If it’s on Netflix I will commit arson.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Spent the week watching this in pieces and boy did it impress.

A movie and a show are very different things, so there’s no real reason to compare them. I love them both for different reasons.

Given the gift of time, the TV show is the truer adaptation of the book (which is my favorite book of all time, as if it needed to be said) but not the better one in my opinion.

The film tweaks some things, combines…

We used to be a society that made well-lit, extremely horny fantasy epics with excellent production design and terrible performances. What happened to us? Why did we let Ronald Reagan do this to us?

Watching this triggered a deeper think about something I’ve become a little obsessed with recently: the concept of what storytelling should be. And where I’ve settled on it for now is that we’ve become a little too concerned with thoughts and people explaining them to each other…

"You want the scent? Smell yourself."

Cool as hell, and explains some of the references in Cartman’s Incredible Gift, one of my favorite South Park episodes.

The needle drops have me on the fence between cool and dumb, but I’m sure I’ll fall on the cool side whenever I rewatch this.

It amazes me how we’ve been re-living the 80’s for the last five years or so, and the writers/directors of the day are picking some of the lamest stuff about 80s films to pay tribute to. More Thief and Manhunter, less Goonies and Karate Kid.

New cut, same problems. Sofia isn’t great and it needed Tom Hagen in the story. Fix those things and the coda likely would have been a bigger success. As is, it works fine.

This definitely registers as one of the more fluffy and fun Bond movies, but it’s also one that’s aged especially well given the subject matter.
