This one’s for the ladies. The Marvels, a female driven superhero(ine) film co-written and directed by Nia DaCosta is a fun-filled blast. Featuring the best new character/actress of phase 4 and sporting girl power like a badge of honor, this is the second best product Marvel has put out this year (GotG 3 can’t be topped).
Kamala Khan/Iman Vellani! If she is the future of the MCU then I am here for it. Kamala is one of if not the most endearing character this franchise has to offer. Her childlike fascination for superheros is so genuine and reminiscent of how we (I) felt about celebrities as a kid (and still do to a degree). Her reactions to outer-worldly events are hysterical and equally realistic which creates a relatability a lot of the other heroes don’t have. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is a more well- rounded character this time around and Monica (Teyonah Paris) is good but this is Kamala’s show through and through. I also love the Khan family; especially Kamala’s mother (Zenobia Shroff).
I’m not someone that’s normally all girl power but I really appreciate what Marvel did here. You get not one but three leading female superheroes, a female director and three female screenwriters and I love the representation as well as the role modeling for young girls. All three kick ass and while I don’t really care for the cgi fest, the hand-to-hand combat with them constantly switching places is bad ass and fun. I also love the montage of them trying to figure out how to deal with this issue, creating a real sisterhood. This film just brims with positivity in this respect and I commend it.
I see this has a 3.0 on here and of course I’m baffled as always.
