A Different Man finds offbeat humor and stages multiple perspectives in how we see and portray the asymmetrical world. Captured with nuance, this ambitiously layered story doesn’t stop at any point you think it will. For what lends itself to the parts we play and the significance we have in life, channeling Kaufman-esque comparisons to Synecdoche, New York, Schimberg dials in on existentialism through visual metaphors like fixed ceilings and breaking them just to be imperfect again, the joy of ice…
Whether by design or by accident, this is the movie no one wanted. There’s no real love interest, no pandering fan service, no memorable flamboyant musical numbers, no real martyr, no easter eggs or some up and coming actor to pass the torch to. A story about one of humanities forgotten many that thought he deserved something bigger than himself. Tears down the fandoms of true crime and superhero movies the same way it tears down its titular character, where the…
Maybe too elusive on the first watch, especially in comparison to his more tangible features I’ve seen like Solaris and Stalker. Still, an absolute miraculous director on display here, with a specific shot of just a breeze had my jaw dropping. Look forward to deepening my relationship to Tarkosvky’s work, but this one maybe take a few watches to connect with.
Suicide runs through the narrative here and what a path that seems worth traveling after you’ve sold out to climb the corporate ladder, or giving yourself to someone who will only love you until the next eye candy joins the staff at his office building. Being nice every chance you get is just a ticket for someone to punch when they decide to take advantage of you, but standing up for yourself and putting care and values at the forefront despite any risk of loneliness or terminal desk job position, well then you will find yourself transcending to that of a true mensch.
Something here about chasing a thinly veiled lifestyle that will only create a more hideous and monstrous version of yourself. With that and the horrible industry that breeds these kinds of thoughts, The Substance is a riot to watch unfold. It may have less to say than the early detractor’s wish, but it makes up for it by being the most face melting metal horror sensory experience I’ve ever seen in a theater. Has so many influences on its mind, but…
David Fincher’s The Batman, this is not. To wear the mark of that influence one would assume its share of good dialogue, tension, and shocks to the core as we unravel what’s burrowing deeper beneath the surface. Maybe the most interesting comparison was one to The Crow, which unfortunately doesn’t imbue the same sense of dread, weirdness, or of a multilayered revenge story, but I can see the sad boy tone and 90’s grunge soundtrack doing the heavy lifting there.…
