A director I’ve not been acquainted with until now, though one I’m still keen on despite this being pretty tedious to sit through. I think if you’ve at least heard of Oppenheimer’s other work, you can imagine how he got this gig and the passion that went into it. Someone who clearly inspects and dissects humanity at their worst, and while spinning a musical around that sounds like a big swing, I don’t think I’m walking away with much to admire. No great film can be long enough and no bad movie can end soon enough, as they say. I wanted to check my watch so bad, but I feared there would be too much time left in the film. Just could not find the wavelength to enjoy or appreciate this exercise, but a premise of elites grappling with the world they created if only trying to find enjoyment and reflection in its ruins does sound great on paper.
