Taking his audience back to both the autumnal New England hamlet of Winter River and the shuffling canted corridors of the Neitherworld, Tim Burton presents a delightfully macabre treat in "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." The sequel, coming 36 years after Burton's unquestionably fantastic "Beetlejuice," offers a layered narrative with returning and new characters, a sizable heart, and plenty of attitude thanks to the demon the the film's core. Burton's best hallmarks communicate that narrative, and story rollicks with handmade visual energy and enough winky whimsy to temper the work's dark corners. The cast is uniformly enjoyable, and the film's human themes are never hidden by the copious hijinks on display. This is a second chapter worthy of its predecessor.
