The gorgeous watercolor backdrops and lively score go without saying, as does the perfect mix of wholesome slice-of-life portrait with a touch of the surreal. This seems like maybe the Ghibli most geared completely to children, which I mean as a compliment - the two girls are really believable in their mix of cutesy adventure-seeking with real emotional vulnerability. Not much in the way of overt conflict; just the vague fear of the unknown. Another Miyazaki home run.
