Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

the score from Carrie (1976) playing for the films epilogue? absolutely not. i didn’t like that.

i don’t know. as somebody who has never been the biggest Beetlejuice fan, this sequel is just fine i guess to me. i enjoyed some practical effects and frowned at some digital ones.

surprisingly, Jenna Ortega and Winona Ryder were my least favorite parts of the movie, par from the sloppy narrative structure. they just didn’t do anything special here for me; nothing that made either one of their performances stand out. i actually thought Catherine O’Hara shines brightest here, besides Michael Keaton as our title character of course. he’s great again.

am i the only one who’s tired of seeing Jenna Ortega play the ‘moody morbid teenager’ bit? i don’t know, it just feels too easy here and i would have preferred them going the opposite route and switch things up. it works in Wednesday but i would like to see her range beyond that performance. and Ryder here, she just feels more like she’s channeling Joyce in Stranger Things than she does Lydia. is it just me?

overall though, it’s not really a movie that i’m going to watch again, but it’s not terrible. some familiar tunes and gags had me amused. i laughed a couple times. but there’s a plot twist that really annoyed me, and another plot line that felt all-but-pointless in the long run which was disappointing. i leave Beetlejuice Beetlejuice feeling no different than i did before i started it.

its good to see Danny Devito in another Burton film. he’s great as per usual. i swear, he belongs in Tim Burtons weird gothic universe(s) even better than he does the one we exist in now.

on one final note: baby Beetlejuice. i’ll add an extra 0.5 for that crazy-ass concept.

that is all.
