Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not without its glaring flaws, but Tim Burton did manage to win me over on a number of occasions. From Jenna Ortega in a leading role and compelling, ghoulish teen romance subplot to Willem Dafoe's cool ass character design, to the needledrop of Pino Donaggio's original 1976 main title score from Carrie during a final act sequence, and the general atmosphere remaining as wacky as the original. It all flows in a manner quite easy to digest, this being one of many in a requel trend I find myself starting to grow increasingly fatigued by.
On the downside, it was made about twenty years too late and relies on millennial nostalgia and Spirit Halloween sales and Winona Ryder and that fuck ass haircut to generate its audience. Not much new ground gets covered here, and the soul-sucking ex-wife villain feels underutilized by the end of it. Explicitly killing off the elephant in the room was a nice sentiment and all, but maybe not the best way to push plot by plastering a pedo's face on long shots and honing in on singing children.
