The Wild Robot—is it really that great, or have we just been starving for decent animated movies so much that any slight improvement feels like a masterpiece? I enjoyed it, but I’m not head over heels about it. I’ve got to admit, the animation style is beautiful, and the editing flows really well. Visually, it’s a treat.
Story-wise, though, I struggled to engage because the script felt a bit too simple and familiar. This is a narrative we’ve seen many times, so the predictability is hard to ignore. The dialogue has its funny moments and tries to cater to its target audience, but there’s nothing that really stands out.
It’s very much a kids-oriented movie, and I have to recognize that the simplicity is part of its design. It would be unfair of me to judge it for doing exactly what it’s meant to do. I guess I’m the one out of place, being outside of the intended age range. Still, as an audience member, it feels fair to ask for some freshness, some creativity. We’ve seen plenty of animated films that dig deeper emotionally while still keeping things interesting for kids.
I’d definitely recommend this to young kids; it’s perfect for them. But as for myself, I’m not sure I’d revisit it anytime soon.
