Balaeniceps rex est species permagnarum avium familiae Balaenicipitidarum ordinis Pelicaniformium. Forma generalis formae ciconiarum similis est, et propter hanc morphologiam olim inter ciconiiformes digerebatur; genetica autem indicia eum inter pelecaniformes nunc digerunt. Rostrum est immane, atque aliquantulum calceiforme videtur. Adultus plerumque est canus, cum pulli brunneores essent. In magnis paludinibus in Africa Orientali tropica a Sudania Australi ad Zambiam invenitur.[2]
