The Training Grounds (sometimes known as the Bell Tower Courtyard)[3] were a part of the grounds of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The grounds were flat, short-cut grassy areas and were located near the Herbology greenhouses. It was overlooked by the Bell Tower Wing (the Training Grounds Tower, the Bell Towers, and the intermediary building) and the Defence Against the Dark Arts Tower.[1]
History[]
An outdoor banquet held as part of the Hogwarts graduation festivities would take place in the Training Grounds.[4]
During the 19th century, the grounds were known as the Bell Tower Courtyard. They had a large, circular path surrounding a fountain, and the area was linked to the Road to Hogsmeade. Flying lessons taught by Chiyo Kogawa would take place here.[3]
During the 1980s, Flying lessons taught by Madam Rolanda Hooch took place on the Training Grounds.[5][6][7] Jacob's sibling and William Weasley would also often practise defensive spells on training dummies on the Training Grounds.[8][9] Patricia Rakepick also taught them how to cast the Shield Charm on the Training Grounds in 1987 in a private lesson.[10] Rakepick also taught them and a select group of other students the Blasting Curse on the Training Grounds using Mechanical Death Eaters while training them to be potential Curse-Breakers.[11]
During the 1996–1997 school year, the Hufflepuff Duelling Club held its practices in the Training Grounds.[2] A secret room was located near the grounds.[12]
Behind the scenes[]
- The grounds of Alnwick Castle were used to film the Training Grounds scenes in the first film adaptation. However, in the later films the Training Grounds become slightly different, with a ruined section.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, this was also where Oliver Wood taught Harry Potter about the rules of Quidditch. In the novel, that discussion took place on the Quidditch pitch. This is also where Madam Hooch taught Flying class, whereas in the book, such lessons were held on the lawn by the Forbidden Forest.
- In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets the Whomping Willow is located in the Training Grounds. In the subsequent film adaptations, the Whomping Willow is in a much different area.
- In the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the Training Grounds are not accessible, but you can clearly see them if the player stands in front of the Owlery.
- In the video game adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Training Grounds is covered with thin green mist with muddy-looking grass and appears ruined.
- The Training Grounds is not present in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
