- "Three times a week they went out to the greenhouses behind the castle to study Herbology, with a dumpy little witch called Professor Sprout, where they learned how to take care of all the strange plants and fungi, and found out what they were used for."
- — Usage of the Hogwarts greenhouses[src]
The Hogwarts greenhouses or Herbology greenhouses[2] were where Herbology classes were taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.[1] During the 1996–1997 school year, the greenhouses were also used by the Potions Club.[2]
Description[]
They were located on the north side of the castle, after the vegetable patch. The greenhouses had statues of long, serpentine dragon statues running along the peaked roofs.[3] They were home to many exotic and magical plants including some that were extremely rare, difficult to cultivate and maintain, or dangerous, such as Mandrakes,[4] Venomous Tentacula[4][5] or Snargaluffs.[6]
History[]
During the 1890–1891 school year there was one large multi-tiered greenhouse with multiple rooms in place of the many separate greenhouses that would be seen later. In the centre of the greenhouse was a large tree which had a system of roots that stretched as deep as the dungeons. There were many plants available for students to pick and study, such as Venomous Tentacula and Dirigible Plums, as well as several non-magical plants like cacti and bamboo.[7]
At one point, the greenhouses might have been gardens.[8] The greenhouses were surrounded by battlements.[7] Although these battlements were very large in the 19th century,[7] they had been reduced by the 20th century.[3]
Known greenhouses[]
Greenhouse One[]
Used by first-year Herbology students.[1]
Greenhouse Two[]
Another greenhouse where some Herbology lessons were taught.[9]
Greenhouse Three[]
Used by second to seventh-year Herbology classes, this greenhouse contained Mandrakes[4] along with various other species of plants. It was later used by Horace Slughorn in the 1996–1997 school year to surreptitiously collect Venomous Tentacula leaves for usage in Potion-making.[10]
Greenhouse Four[]
Another greenhouse where some advanced Herbology lessons were taught.[9]
Greenhouse Five[]
Another greenhouse where some advanced Herbology lessons were taught.[9]
Greenhouse Six[]
Another greenhouse where some advanced Herbology lessons were taught.[9]
Greenhouse Seven[]
Another greenhouse where some advanced Herbology lessons were taught.[9]
Herbology Professor's office[]
Used by Pomona Sprout to work and presumably sleep during her stay at Hogwarts.[9][11]
Behind the scenes[]
- In the books and video game adaptations of books 1-4, the Herbology greenhouses are located across the Hogwarts grounds from the castle. In the films and later video games, they are nestled in an open-roofed wing of the castle. The pavilion is still accessed from a door to the grounds, although there is also a door in one of the greenhouses that leads to the Charms corridor.
