The following events happened in the 1870s:

Events

• 1871: The first-ever international rugby match takes place in Edinburgh, between Scotland and England. Squib Angus Buchanan plays for Scotland. He scores the first try, and Scotland wins the match.
• 1872: Bolandi, the manufacturers of Bolandi's Exquisite Crystallized Pineapple, is established.
• 1874: Elm Distilleries starts producing Dragon Barrel Brandy, and Swotts & Swotts Scotch Distilleries starts producing Swott Malt Whisky.
• 1875: Gripping Charms are discovered, revolutionising the design of the Quaffle.
• 1875: The Ministry of Magic passes the Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery.
• 1875: Albert Tillyman dies. His wife Violet, presumed missing for the past twenty years, comes out of hiding, revealing that she's been living with Myron Otherhaus, having ended up at his home due to a Floo mishap.
• 1876: Peachtree Fizzing Tea brand established.
• 1876: Hogwarts caretaker Rancorous Carpe devises an elaborate trap to capture and contain Peeves, the resident poltergeist. The trap fails and causes Peeves to come into possession of several dangerous weapons, which leads to an evacuation of the school. After three days, an agreement between Peeves and Headmistress Eupraxia Mole is reached, resulting in Peeves gaining new privileges.
• 1876: The sixty-eighth Wizarding Schools Potions Championship is held.
• 1876: Globus Mundi Travel Agents is established.
• 1877: In August, the 393rd Quidditch World Cup takes place in the Ryn Desert, Kazakhstan. This Cup would be known to history as "The Tournament that Nobody Remembers": for some unknown reason, no one in the wizarding world could remember a single match of the whole tournament after it had ended (theories for what had transpired range from mass Memory Charms cast by the Goblin Liberation Front, at that time very active and attracting anarchist wizards, to a massive breakout of Cerebrumous Spattergroit, that causes memory loss and confusion). Whatever the reason, the tournament was re-staged the following year.
• 1878: The Great Poacher Raid of 1878, where the largest poaching ring in eastern Wales is taken out by Dinah Hecat.
• 1879: Elias Grimstone creates the Oakshaft 79 broomstick.
