Roman:
Niko! My cousin! I can't believe it! You're here!
Niko:
Hey!
Roman:
Welcome to America!
Niko:
Good to see you, cousin.
Roman:
What?
Niko:
Good to see you, man - what, you forget our language?
Roman:
Uhhh... cabbages?
Roman greets Niko with open arms, and welcomes him to America.

The Cousins Bellic is the first storyline mission in Grand Theft Auto IV.

Plot and Walkthrough[]

Arriving in Liberty City[]

"Daddy's back, you bitches!" cries a Dave Bosoy getting flagellated by a Thai Prostitute. Niko Bellic knocks on Dave's door and asks him to come out, but with no avail. Hossan Ramzy, Niko's friend, tells him to leave Dave behind and asks for help docking the ship.

A low-angle shot of the mighty ship accompanied by the opening credits of Grand Theft Auto IV ensues. Niko and Hossan climb on a metal platform to behold the skyline of Liberty City pierced by skyscrapers. Niko gives Hossan an account of the abundant wealth which his cousin Roman allegedly enjoys since moving to America.

Upon docking, the passengers disembark. Niko doesn't wait long before Roman hurtles down the quay in his taxi. He gets out of the car drunk, and rejoices on seeing Niko again. Considering his inebriated state, he advises Niko to drive the car back home. Niko enquires about the taxi, as Roman claimed he had a sports car, to which he replies that it is "in the shop".

Drive to Roman's apartment[]

Drive to Roman's place.
Waypoint: Broker Safehouse located on Mohawk Avenue in Hove Beach, Broker.

As Niko and Roman set off, Roman says that the bridges in the city have been closed due to a terrorist threat. Incidentally, he advises Niko to stay in Broker as he does not have a visa. Presently, they pull up in front of a modest three-storey tenement in Hove Beach. "This is the mansion?" asks Niko, bewildered. Roman says that it is "just a temporary place". Niko walks inside to discover an incredibly dirty and unkempt apartment and realises that the playboy lifestyle that Roman had boasted about in his emails was a lie, and that he actually runs a taxi firm. Niko is dismayed, but decides to stay. The mission ends with Roman saying he has to get the taxi back to the depot, and he leaves the apartment whilst answering an aggressive phone call from Vlad.

Reward[]

  • The mission It's Your Call is unlocked.
  • The player can now save their game at the Broker Safehouse and store vehicles in the parking space outside.
  • The player will also receive the Off The Boat Achievement/Trophy.

Transcript[]

Aboard the Platypus
Aboard the Platypus, Dave Bosoy is being whipped by an unknown woman. Meanwhile in the corridor outside of Dave's quarters, Niko Bellic knocks on the door. Hossan Ramzy calls Niko to prepare boat for docking. Niko and Hossan leave.
Dave: Daddy's back, you bitches... Daddy's back you bitches!
Niko: Dave, come on. Come on Dave.
Hossan: Niko? What are you doing?
Niko: Dave is not coming.
Hossan: Ah ignore him. Come on we got to get this thing ready before we dock. Let's go.
An exterior shot of the Platypus is shown as it approaches its destination.
Hossan: Here, pass me that.
Niko and Hossan climb to a platform on the deck of the Platypus. The camera pans to reveal the Liberty City skyline in front of the ship.
Hossan: There. Whooh yeah! There she is... Liberty City!
Niko: Yeah.
Hossan: You ever been?
Niko: No.
Hossan: Crazy place, Niko.
Other people are seen loading items into the trunk of a car aboard the ship. Then there is a shot of crew celebrating on the ship's bridge. Niko and Hossan continue walking around the ship, eventually going back inside it.
Niko: What you going to do?
Hossan: I might come back on board... or I might try to make a go of it. Like they say, it is the land of opportunity. I always wanted to make it big... own a nice place, get a dog, a house... live the dream!
Niko: Like my cousin.
Hossan: Oh yeah?
Niko: Yes - he's got the lot - house, women, cars, parties... he writes me in these wild emails, and after I got into trouble, I thought maybe uh... and then I got this gig, and I spent the next seven months with you fine people and I forget...
Cut to the kitchen. A cook briefly examines a diamond before dropping it into a bowl of cake batter. He repeats the process with another diamond as we cut to a wide shot of the kitchen, then back to Niko and Hossan.
Niko: After the war finished, I couldn't get a job, nobody could... so I, uh, did some dumb things and got involved with some idiots...
Hossan: Ahh, we all do dumb things... that's what makes us human.
Niko: Could be.
The Grand Theft Auto IV logo appears in the sky as the view pans down over the Algonquin skyline. The car from before, a Schafter is hoisted up in front of the logo. This cuts to an overhead shot of the Platypus, now docked in East Hook, then a several shots of the Platypus as the car continues to be unloaded from the ship. Eventually, several people, Niko included are seen exiting the ship. One of them bumps into Niko as he passes.
Niko: Hey...
Niko is left alone as the others leave. After a moment, another car appears, speeding around the dock. It stops in front of Niko, revealing Roman Bellic as the driver. He exits the car and greets Niko with a hug.
Roman: Niko! My cousin! I can't believe it! You're here!
Niko: Hey!
Roman: Welcome to America!
Niko: Good to see you, cousin.
Roman: What?
Niko: Good to see you, man - what, you forget our language?
Roman: Uhhh... cabbages? Maybe a little. I've been here 10 years! You can speak English. Remember, we learned off the English girls with the big...
Niko: Hey, a little... not so good.
Roman: Ahh, you'll be fine. Better than my Serbian. So good to see you cousin. I can't believe you made it! Ha! Shit... I have to tell you I had quite a night last night. Two women! The land of opportunity. I've made it!
Roman loads Niko's suitcase into the trunk of the car, then takes a drink from a bottle enclosed in a paper bag. He briefly loses his balance.
Roman: Shit, man, I'm still a touch drunk.
Niko: A touch?
Roman: (yelling) My cousin is here!
Niko: Woah! Roman, Roman, come on, come on, relax.
Roman: (yelling) We're going to rule the world!
Some dock workers overhear this conversation.
Worker 1: Yeah, yeah, whatever, buddy. Just take over the world someplace else, alright?
Worker 2: Yeah, buddy!
Worker 1: You're in the Goddamn way!
Worker 2: Take off!
Roman: Screw you... screw you all! My cousin is here!
Niko: Hey, come on, man!
Roman: Niko Bellic! He's the fucking man, bitches!
Worker 1: Ah, get the hell outta here!
Worker 2: Yeah, get outta here!
Niko: Roman, come on, let's go... to the mansion, eh?
Roman: Yes, the mansion!
Roman stumbles again.
Roman: Whoa. Maybe you should drive...
Niko: Maybe I should.
Roman: Okay!
Niko closes the trunk of the car and approaches the driver's seat.
Niko: Okay. Hey is this a cab? Where's the sports car?
Roman: Err, it's in the shop... come on!
The Drive to the Mansion
Niko drives to Roman's apartment.
Roman: Drive us to our place on Mohawk, it's just up the road. I'll let you know when we're there.
Niko: Why don't you show me around the city?
Roman: Fucking terrorists.
Niko: What?
Roman: Terrorists. There's been a big scare and you can't go across the bridges so good. You, without a visa, I would stay in Broker. Fuck it, stay in Hove Beach. Everyone like us does. Niko, you ever had two women at once? Four big titties to be playing with? I thought I had died and gone to Heaven, man.
Niko: I can't prove that I have.
Roman: Cousin, it's been too long... you should have come out earlier. Think of all the girls you've been missing out on!
Niko: Our country has women too.
Roman: Yes, but only locals. Here, we have white, black, the Puerto Ricans and the Asians, Europeans on vacation... scared Canadians, bored housewives from the Midwest - every possible choice. The city is like a big Uder Milken Ice Cream shop: thirty-six flavors of titty. Hove Beach is our little corner of Eastern Europe.
Niko: What a charming image. Hove Beach, next to the docks. Immigrants here do not make it very far from the boats they come in on.
Roman: No, everyone seems happy where they are. It reminds them of the Black Sea or something - people leave home to hang around the people they ran away from, very odd. Is just temporary for us though. Our sights are set from the top. Mansions in Berchem, penthouse in Algonquin... a model on each arm - me and my cousin Niko, rulers of the world!

As Niko drives past Roman's car depot, Roman will say one of the following. This pauses the above dialogue, but it will resume once one of these lines is completed.
Roman: We are passing the cab office, Niko. This is the business that will take us to the top of the pile.
Roman: That is my cab depot, cousin. It is where I make all the money.

Roman will say one of the following. This pauses the above dialogue, but it will resume once Niko re-enters the car.
Roman: How are you going to find your way around the city without me? Come back Niko. Don't be a child.
Roman: I thought we were a team. Come back Niko.
Roman: Where you going, cousin. Niko don't be a dick.
Roman: I need to show you our place. Come back Niko.

Roman will say one of the following.
Roman: And stop with this weird behavior of yours.
Roman: I will show you around more later.
Roman: Oh, you're back. Can we go home now? Please, important sir.
Roman: What'd you do that for? Let's go home. If that is okay with his majesty?
Roman: Did you see everything you wanted to see? Can you drive your cousin home now?
Roman: I'm drunk and tired, Niko. Please drive me home. Be a good guy.

The Mansion
Niko and Roman arrive at the Broker Safehouse, in a multi-level apartment building alongside the elevated subway line in Hove Beach.
Niko: This is the mansion?
Roman: Just a temporary place. The mansion is coming, cousin. That's the dream... follow me.
Niko and Roman enter the apartment.
Roman: Come in, come in! Make yourself at home... what's mine is yours!
The place is not much to speak of. As Niko looks around, Roman discovers, then steps on a cockroach.
Roman: Got him! Little bastard. If he paid some rent I wouldn't care... Oh... shit... oh, that's not nice... Ah, cousin, it's so good to see you! Yeah! Hmm...
Roman lays down on the bed.
Roman: Shit... well, I needed to change anyway... So!
Niko: So...
Roman: So...
Niko: So, you full of crap, or what?
Roman: What?
Niko: Where's luxury condo? Where's sports car? Where's Barbara with big titties and Stephanie who sucks like a vacuum?
Roman: What you talking about?
Niko: In your letters to my mother, in your letters to me... all I hear about is Mr. Big, Mr. Roman, living the American dream. Sports cars, condos, women, money, the beach... opportunity! I come here, and the only thing big about your life is the cockroaches.
Roman: That's right. I got the best cockroaches, I got the best dirt!
Niko: Screw you, you idiot!
Roman: Okay, I'm an idiot, but you must admit I have the best line in bullshit you ever heard.
Niko: Yeah, this I know. Asshole.
Roman gets up and faces Niko.
Roman: But here, all I needed was one good guy. One good guy, I could do well. Not take over the world, but do okay. Now, maybe I have this.
Roman walks to the kitchen and sits at a table.
Roman: But what about you? What about you, cousin?
Niko: What? What about me?
Roman: Well... why you leave home after all this time? First, I hear you're running with the wrong kind, then I hear you joined the merchant navy, now you're here. You never tell me anything.
Niko: Huh. No.
Roman: What do you mean no?
Niko: No, I never tell you anything. Another time.
Roman: (mocking) Oooh, mystery man... strange and exotic sailor! What happened? Did your captain made you pregnant?
Niko: Screw you! No, no, it's nothing like that. The ships were fine.
Niko sits at the table.
Niko: It was before that, two things. You remember, during the war... we did some bad things and bad things happened to us. War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other. I was very young, and very angry. Maybe that is no excuse... Roman? Roman! Are you sleeping, you fat fuck? Come on!
Roman: Huh! No! No way! What's the time? Shit... I've got to get the cab back. It's on a shift.
Roman hurriedly drinks from a mug on the table, then spits out in disgust.
Roman: Oh, Jesus! Tastes like a rat shat in it...
Niko: Roman...
Roman: Niko, I've got to run, come meet me at the cab office.
Niko: Jesus... what?
Roman: It's easy. Out the door, turn left, and the first left at the diner,
Niko: What are you talking about? I don't...
Roman: go down one block and turn right on Iroquois,
Niko: I'm new here...
Roman: then walk all the way down and we're right there on the left on the corner of Cisco Street.
Niko: what are you talking about, man?
Roman: It's really flash. We got lots of titties and some incredible motors... Niko. Give me a hug. Good to have you here cousin... I've got something for you.
Roman gets a phone call.
Roman: Oh, damn... damn, damn, damn! Yes, Vlad, sorry, forgive me, okay, no... no. Please don't cut my cock off, eh? Oh, okay, bye... yes, no, uh, okay.
Roman leaves.
Tutorial: The flashing house icon on the radar shows the entrance to this apartment. You can save the game here. Sleeping on the bed will save the game and advance time by six hours. The flashing Blips-GTAIV-Roman on the radar shows where to meet Roman.
Niko exits the apartment building.
Tutorial: You can save any vehicle in the parking spot outside your safehouse. Park your car there and exit it. The car will remain there for you to use. To replenish your health you can visit fast food vendors, like hot dog stands, around the city. The circle around the radar represents your health and body armor. The green left half of the circle is your health. As you lose health the green will fade out. The right half of the circle is your body armor.
Fail Cutscenes & Dialogues
There are none in this mission. Failing the mission in any way will restart the mission beginning with the drive from the docks at East Hook.

Trivia[]

  • The first song heard in the game is "Soviet Connection" by Michael Hunter, GTA IV's theme. The second song heard is "Schweine" by Glukoza, inside Roman's cab. It is featured on the in-game radio station Vladivostok FM.
    • The song in Roman's car will change if the player skips the cutscene, but the radio station will always be Vladivostok FM.
      • After the April 26th 2018 patch that removed and replaced the majority of Vladivostok FM due to the music licenses expiring (PC and Xbox One only), the set song playing in Roman's cab was replaced with "The Invasion" by Seryoga.
  • Roman's taxi in this mission has a lower acceleration than usual, presumably because this is the first car driven by new players that are not yet familiar with the driving style (especially those familiar with the controls used in the 3D Universe games, as opposed to the different controls used in GTA IV).
    • Roman's taxi in this mission is also notable for having an all-black body, whereas in free roam the car always spawns with a differently colored front driver's side quarter panel.
    • During the cutscene, the car has Marbelle wheels instead of the ones it has during gameplay.
  • The opening of the Rockstar game Red Dead Redemption mirrors this mission, as the protagonists (Niko Bellic and John Marston in Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption respectively) arrive by boat and a car is lifted off the boat by a crane.
  • Niko places his suitcase next to the front door of the apartment, but when the cutscene ends, the suitcase can no longer be seen.
  • If the player tries to enter the apartment before parking in the space (and thus starting the cutscene), it will be locked.
  • In the third trailer for the game, "Move Up, Ladies," the scene with Roman meeting Niko is shown during the day while in-game the mission takes place at night.
  • Niko says "Drago Dirat Dicu" in this mission. Many people consider this a "half and half" sentence (meaning that all the words used in this sentence are not of the same language). It was later confirmed by Michael Hollick at Comic-Con that all the words are part of the ancient Serbian language and are considered a part of Serbian in the old Yugoslavia and most parts of Russia.
  • Roman comments on how the city is a "big Üder Milken ice cream shop", with "36 flavors of titty". This is a reference to Baskin and Robbins, which is notable for having 31 flavors of ice cream.
  • The portion of the opening cutscene in which Roman enters in his cab is a possible reference to a similar scene from the 1971 film; The French Connection in which, a Lincoln Continental (on which Roman's taxi is based) drives at speed onto a Brooklyn dock as a car is being lowered from a nearby ship.
  • If the player somehow manages to save before this mission ends (such as enabling movement with mods after the second cutscene ends) then the save game file will be called "In The Beginning", similarly to that of 3D Universe GTA games.
  • The title of the mission is a reference to Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1880 novel The Brothers Karamazov.
