"Revenge"
Go put on a suit if you aren't already wearing one.
Go and pick up Kate.
Meet Roman at the church.
Description[]
Regardless of what choice did the player made beforehand, Roman will call Niko a day before his wedding. He will tell Niko to get some sleep and be at the church next day at 10 am.
This is the only mission common to both endings of the game. The mission consists purely of a cutscene depicting Roman's wedding to Mallorie Bardas -- the end of the scene, however, depends on which decision the player took in the previous mission.
"Deal"[]
Assassin: "Niko Bellic?"
Niko: "Yes?"
Assassin: "A gift from Dimitri Rascalov."
—The wedding assassin, moments before attempting to shoot Niko
If the player chooses the "Deal" ending, Kate McReary becomes upset with Niko for making a deal with Dimitri Rascalov, and refuses to go to the wedding. Roman, however, is happy that Niko did the deal and put his hatred of Dimitri aside. Roman reminds Niko to wear a suit and be at the church in Suffolk the following day.
The next day, Roman calls Niko and asks him where he is at since he is getting married and it cannot happen without his best man. Niko assures him that his is on his way. Later, Niko arrives at the church and witnesses Roman and Mallorie get married. Outside, the crowd cheer as Roman and Mallorie exit the church. During the celebrations, a bald man walks up behind Niko. He draws a pistol, saying "A gift from Dimitri Rascalov". Niko wrestles with him and, after two stray shots are fired, succeeds in forcing the pistol back and shooting the assassin in the head, killing him instantly. Roman, however, was accidentally shot dead during the struggle.
Mallorie breaks down into tears. Furious at his cousin's death, Niko repeatedly shoots the assassin's body until the gun runs out of ammunition, and then starts kicking it. Little Jacob calms him down and promises Niko that he will track down Dimitri and call him when he does, before telling Niko to go home. The next day, Niko wakes up in his apartment in Bohan, before saying "Roman... I'm so sorry, cousin." to himself. A few minutes later, Niko receives a call from Little Jacob, explaining that he's found Pegorino's men and asks Niko to meet him in Koresh Square in Alderney, which triggers the final mission.
"Revenge"[]
“You fucking double crossing immigrant shit!”
— Jimmy Pegorino, angered at Niko's decision in not going through with the Deal, before shooting at the crowd.
If the player chooses the "Revenge" ending, Roman will call Niko on the morning of the wedding day, claiming that it is the happiest day of his life as he is getting married to Mallorie. Roman reminds Niko to wear some nice clothes and be at the church at 10am.
Later, Niko calls Kate and tells her that he took her advice. Kate tells Niko she is happy that Niko "cut his ties" with Dimitri and tells him to pick her up for the wedding. Niko meets Kate at her mother's house, before driving to the church in Suffolk.
The conversation on the journey to the church varies depending on Niko's relationship with Kate. If it's high, Kate will remind Niko that they're going to the church where her brother's funeral took place, then wishes that her deceased brother had been happy in his life and that "the right person" likely would have done it. Niko explains that he is ready to give up his criminal lifestyle and settle down, implying that Kate is the right person for Niko. Upon questioning this idea, Niko promises Kate that he'll protect her.
If Niko's relationship with Kate is low, Niko says that he wants to try and "get to know" Kate better and explains his desire to try and "walk away" from his criminal lifestyle. Upon hearing that this lifestyle has hurt those close to him, and Niko's statement that Roman is the only family he has in the city, Kate mentions that she cares about him too, and that she's willing to take a chance on him.
Niko and Kate arrive at the church and witness Roman and Mallorie get married. Outside, the crowd cheer and congratulate Roman and Mallorie as they exit the church.
During the celebrations, a black car drives past and the passenger window rolls down to reveal an enraged Jimmy Pegorino, who shoots at the crowd with an assault rifle whilst shouting "You fucking double crossing immigrant shit!" at Niko. The car speeds off and it is revealed that Kate has been shot. Roman shouts for someone to call an ambulance, but Niko reveals that Kate is already dead. Roman tells Niko he should not blame himself, but an enraged Niko lashes out at Roman and claims that it is his fault that Kate died. Little Jacob and Roman attempt to calm Niko before telling him to go home.
The next morning, Niko wakes up in his apartment in Bohan, before saying "Damn, I was meant to protect her!" or "Poor girl... She should never have gotten close to me." to himself. A few minutes later, Niko receives a call from Little Jacob, who explains that he and Roman have found some of Pegorino's men in Koresh Square in Alderney. Meeting Jacob and Roman will trigger the final mission.
Because I'm going to the wedding of a couple I've never met with a man I barely know.
Niko:
Okay, maybe it is weird, but maybe it isn't. I feel like I want to get to know you properly. I have tied up a lot of loose ends in this city recently. I feel like it's time to move on, start living my life right.
Kate:
But you're a tough guy with a death wish. A thieving, murdering drug dealing idiot. Do you think you can just walk away from all that?
Niko:
I can try.
Kate:
Good luck, Niko. I really hope you can walk away. But, do you think the men you've dealt with will just let you leave and walk into the sunset?
Niko:
They will have to.
Kate:
I thought that when you do the work that you do, that people get their hooks into you. And then there's no way out.
Niko:
I was good once, I was a normal kid who got sucked into a war he didn't believe in and forced to watch his friends die. Forced to do things he did not want to do in order to survive. If I can get pulled into this world I can pull myself out. I have tried to make the right choices, to surround myself with good people rather than bad ones. Good people like you. That has to count for something.
Kate:
Tell me, have these good people been hurt by what you've had to do? Has your cousin been caught up in your mad life?
Niko:
Maybe you're right. Roman has been hurt. He has lost a lot because of me. Someone without his good naturedness and optimism would have been broken by what has happened to him. I am lucky that he is still happy to be a part of my family. The one family I have in this city...
Kate:
He might be your only family, but he's not the only one who cares about you, Niko.
Niko:
Really?
Kate:
Don't be stupid. I'm not coming to this wedding for the free nibbles. I'm coming because of you. Because... no matter how stupid I think this is, I'm willing to take a chance on you. Willing to take a chance on the possibility that you can walk away from the craziness. That there is a real human being under all that hardness. The rational half of me says get away from him - protect yourself. But the other half says he's good, he can be redeemed.
Niko:
Well, which half are you going to listen to?
Kate:
I'm Irish, Niko. We're a people known for strong whiskey, mystics, and Catholicism. Rational blood doesn't flow through these veins.
Niko:
You won't regret this, Kate. I'll look after you. I'll protect you.
Kate:
So, how do sociopaths behave at weddings? Will you fire a gun into the air as your cousin walks down the aisle?
Niko:
No, there won't be any gunfire at this wedding. I might steal the collection box if the mood takes me though.
Kate:
Oh really?
Niko:
Yeah, I'll mug any nuns that are hanging out around the church as well.
Kate:
You know, it's not that weird to think that there might be some shooting at this wedding. Not only do you seem to attract ultra-violence wherever you go, but this was the church where we had my brother's funeral. You remember how that turned out?
Niko:
Yeah. How are you about that? Do you miss him?
Kate:
I'm okay, he's still in my thoughts, you know. He brought it on himself and he wasn't a good person. When I think about him I just wish that he'd been happy in his life.
Niko:
What would have made him happy?
Kate:
It's hard to say, but maybe the right person.
Niko:
Yeah? Do you think that that is the answer for everyone then?
Kate:
Maybe. The right person can make your life wonderful in the same way that the wrong one can ruin it. The problem is that it's difficult to tell which one the man you are with is.
Niko:
I've had some trouble telling right and wrong apart before. After the war, I was involved in a life I felt was not for me. Those decisions became very difficult.
Kate:
You're talking about your criminal exploits as if they're a thing of the past.
Niko:
Well maybe they are. I don't want to be involved with the men I have been involved with. I want to surround myself with good people, not bad ones. Recently, I have tied up a lot of loose ends in this city. My past does not haunt me in the way that it used to. I have tried to separate myself from it. I am ready to try to be good.
Kate:
Are you? Are you prepared to say goodbye to the fast cars, the drugs, the violence, the cheap women?
Niko:
Yes, I am.
Kate:
Do you think that the men you've been dealing with will let you walk off into the sunset?
Niko:
They will have to. I am not a slave. It would be easier to be happy if I was with the right person though.
Kate:
How do I know that you're right for me? How do I know that I won't get hurt?
Niko:
I'll look after you, Kate. I promise I'll protect you. There's nothing else I can say.
Kate:
You don't need to say anything else.
Niko:
Hey, Kate. I decided to work with that guy. I don't know if it was the right decision, but I did it. He screwed me over again.
Kate:
You see, Niko. You should have gone with your instinct not to trust him. I can't believe you could care about money that much.
Niko:
Well, we do what we can to survive, Kate. Are you coming to Roman's wedding?
Kate:
I don't think so, Niko. I don't want to be around you right now.
Several guests have gathered outside the church as Roman and Mallorie walk by.
Roman:
Hey!... Yes!... Yeah!
Niko:
Congratulations, cousin!
Mallorie:
Thanks for coming!
Roman:
Alright, yes, okay!... Yes, we are married!...
Niko and Roman hug while Mallorie and Kate hug, then Niko and Mallorie hug while Roman and Kate hug. There are several shots of Niko with his arm around Kate as the celebration continues. Meanwhile, a car drives up. One of the windows roll down, revealing Jimmy Pegorino, holding an assault rifle. He points it at the crowd.
Pegorino:
You fucking double crossing immigrant shit!
He fires several shots into the crowd. People scream.
Little Jacob:
Get down! Get down! Get down!
The car drives off. Niko is seen kneeling over Kate's now lifeless body. Jacob and Real Badman look at Niko.
Little Jacob:
Ah, wha gwan inna dis bloodclot?
They, along with Roman and Mallorie, approach Niko.
Roman:
Niko... Niko, come on...
Roman then realizes what's happened.
Roman:
Somebody call an ambulance! Call a fucking ambulance!
Niko:
She's dead!
Roman:
What? Oh shit. Shit, shit!
Niko:
(sobbing) She told me to leave it. I thought I had. I thought it was over!
Little Jacob:
It's never over, iyah.
Roman:
Niko, you can't blame yourself.
Niko stands and shoves Roman.
Niko:
Of course I can! She's dead!
Jacob stands between them.
Little Jacob:
Easy, easy, easy... I your brother, man, easy. Calm down, man, calm down.
Roman:
Niko, you have to get out of here. You have to go...
Little Jacob:
Yes, go on man go on. We haffi leave man, just leave.
Roman:
You have to go... Get out of here! Go!
Little Jacob:
Go on, we take care of this, man. Leave!
Niko:
Okay! Okay!
Niko leaves.
Roman and Mallorie leave the church, greeted by Brucie, Niko, Jacob, and Real Badman.
Niko:
Congratulations, cousin!
Roman:
Thank you... Thank you all for coming!
Roman and Mallorie walk to the curb as the crowd celebrates. An unknown person approaches Niko from behind.
Poor girl, she should never have got close to me...
Niko:
Roman. I'm so sorry, cousin.
A moment later, Niko gets a text from Jacob.
Little Jacob:
(text message) Rhaatid, Niko. Be strong, sight? I going to find this bumbaclot! You need fe get some hardcore weapons and ting while you waiting for me call. I ain't got my car or I'd bring them to you. Easy - LJ
"A man, possibly a jilted lover shot the groom, 31-year-old Roman Bellic and then turned the gun on himself. Police are looking for the groom's cousin for questioning, although he's not a suspect."
Weazel News - Radio ("Revenge")[]
"Brides may worry about a guest looking more beautiful than them on their wedding day, but they don't expect the woman to steal their thunder by getting shot. Well, that's exactly what happened in Suffolk at the wedding of Roman and Mallorie Bellic. A guest, Kate McReary, a 28-year-old woman from Dukes was killed in a drive-by shooting. The groom's cousin, 30-year-old Niko Bellic, is said to have left the scene soon after that shooting. He's wanted for questioning by police, but not as a suspect."
"Speculation is rife as to the motive of this crime. The killer may have been a jilted lover, a terrorist, a man driven mad by violent video games or the member of a sick death cult. Police urge the residents of Liberty City to avoid any type of public gathering in case there are more attacks planned."
Liberty Tree Newspaper ("Revenge")[]
"Roman and Mallorie Bellic's wedding was like something out of a storybook, until gunfire spoiled the party. Soon, one of their guests lay dead and the memory of their union would be soured forever. The couple refused to comment upon the tragedy, but witnesses report seeing a car pull up next to the wedding party and firing shots from the window. Police are looking for the culprit. Mr. Bellic's cousin was reported to have left the scene soon after the murder. He is being sought for questioning in the case but not as a suspect."
Trivia[]
If Niko arrives at the wedding without a suit, he will be instructed to get one. Kate will wait with Bernie, Little Jacob, Brucie, and Roman.
In the pre-mission phone call, Roman tells Niko that he is the best man; however, in Serbian Orthodoxy the best man cannot be from the groom's family.
In the "Deal" storyline, Niko kills the wedding assassin the same way he kills the driver of the Mule in the mission Truck Hustle (by turning the pistol counterclockwise to his face while it repeatedly fires).
If Niko and Kate went on a date, Kate will bring up the events of Undertaker during their journey to the church in the "Revenge" storyline. However, neither Kate nor Niko refer to the deceased McReary brother (Francis or Derrick) by name.
After completing this mission and saving the game, the save title will be "In Mourning" instead of "Mr. & Mrs. Bellic", in reflection of either Roman's death (Deal) or Kate's death (Revenge).
Brucie Kibbutz and Bernie Crane appear at the wedding in both storylines, though they both disappear after Pegorino attacks the party in the "Revenge" choice. In the "Deal" ending, Bernie can be heard shouting "oh my God!" when Niko wrestles the assassin.
In the Deal ending of this mission, even though Kate does not come to the wedding due to her disappointment in Niko’s decision to work with Rascalov, her character model still exists underground, reacting to Roman’s death.
