Sector 6 is a location in the Final Fantasy VII series. One of the eight sectors that make up Midgar, the sector's plate fell during the construction of the city, meaning only its sparsely populated undercity remains. The undercity is notable as the home of the Evergreen Park (みどり公園, Midori Kōen?) and Wall Market, though it is also filled with ruins from the plate's collapse.
History[]
Before Final Fantasy VII[]
During construction of Midgar, traders built an entertainment district to relax after work. This led to a boom in business, but also attracted organized crime. Rather than solve the problem of organized crime, the government walled it in, forming Wall Market.[1] The Sector 6 undercity was once as large as other slums, but over time, people only lived near Wall Market.[2]
Plate Number 6 collapsed around 1976. Because immigration to Sector 6 had not started yet, there were few casualties. The collapse was centered around the edge of the plate closest to the outer wall, meaning areas around the main pillar were largely unaffected. The area's restoration was delayed as Shinra did not allocate any funds for it.[3]
In April 0001, depicted in chapter 4 of Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-, Zack Fair came to Sector 6 with Aerith Gainsborough, and the two spent time in the Evergreen Park where they discussed SOLDIER and its members' extraordinary powers. There, Aerith told Zack she was wary of SOLDIER, but became embarassed when Zack revealed he was part of SOLDIER himself. Aerith also told Zack she was afraid of the sky, but thought that while the glow in Zack's eyes resembled it, it did not frighten her. Their time was cut short when Zack was ordered to return to the Shinra Building.[4]
Zack and Aerith later returned to the park in chapter 7 where they sold flowers for Aerith in the park.[5]
Original continuity[]
In December 0007, during "The Woman at the Church" in Final Fantasy VII, Cloud Strife and Aerith came through Sector 6' collapsed expressway to take Cloud back toward the Sector 7 slums. After reaching the park, Aerith asked to take a break. While there, she reminisced of her time with Zack, telling Cloud about him and how Cloud reminded her of him, namely his mako eyes. Their conversation was cut short as the gate to Sector 7 opened and a chocobo cart emerged with Tifa Lockhart was on board, leading them to follow Tifa to Wall Market. While at Wall Market, the two joined up with Tifa by sneaking into Corneo's mansion and interrogating him.[6]
In "Aeris's Secret", after the Sector 7 plate fell, Cloud, Tifa, and Barret Wallace arrived in Sector 6 after barely escaping the plate. Barret mourned his friends Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie, and his daughter Marlene, though Tifa told him that Aerith had taken Marlene to safety, and the trio left the park to look for her.[7]
Remake continuity[]
In December 0007, "The Town That Never Sleeps" in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Cloud and Aerith came through Sector 6. Aerith gave Cloud the history of the sector, and pointed out Wall Market as a dangerous place. To avoid it, Aerith took Cloud down the collapsed expressway route instead.[1] While taking the shortcut, the two encountered Beck's Badasses, and made use of the moving crane arms to navigate the tunnel and reach the end.
At Evergreen Park, the two took a break at Aerith's request, where Aerith reminisced about Zack.[8] After showing Cloud the route to Sector 7, the two saw a chocobo cart carrying Tifa. Cloud met up with her, and she told him that was planning to interrogate Corneo and Cloud had no need to worry about her. Cloud let her go, until Aerith encouraged him to chase after her, leading them to Wall Market.[9] In Wall Market, the two sought the approval of Corneo's trio, Chocobo Sam (who had scouted Tifa), Madam M, and Andrea Rhodea. Eventually, they secured their way into Corneo's mansion, until Corneo's trap led them all to the sewer system below.
In "A Broken World", after the Sector 7 plate fell, Barret, Tifa, and Cloud landed in Sector 6. A few Sector 7 residents, including Wymer, made their way to Sector 6 successfully, and the Sector 6 residents were largely extremely confused and panicked, although a few gil-hungry individuals sought ways to profit from the situation.[10] Barret mourned his friends, while Tifa questioned if the plate fall was Avalanche's fault, something Barret rejected as it was Shinra's actions. Cloud told Barret that Marlene was still safe with Aerith, and the three traveled to the Sector 5 slums thereafter.[11]
Later, Barret, Cloud, and Tifa came back through the collapsed expressway to reach the ruined Sector 7 to search for survivors. In "In Search of Hope", the three returned once again for a route up to the top of the plate to find Aerith in the Shinra Building, completing odd jobs for some residents around the slums.
Geography[]
Overview[]
The Sector 6 slums are filled with debris and abandoned construction sites left from the Sector 6 plate, which fell after an accident. As such, it has few residents, and no residential area as is seen in the Sector 5 slums or Sector 7 slums. Of the debris left from the fallen plate, the most notable is the Collapsed Expressway, a fallen expressway tunnel in which monsters dwell within the abandoned crushed road.
The main hub of the Sector 6 Slums is Wall Market, a lawless entertainment center walled in on all sides. Another major attraction is the Evergreen Park, a playground frequented by Aerith that is adjacent to a path to the Sector 7 slums. Beneath the slums, a sewer system connects Sector 6 with the Sector 7 plate.
S6-5 Road[]
Featured only in Final Fantasy VII Remake, the S6-5 Road leads directly from the Sector 5 Undercity to Wall Market, with a fork on the road left to the Collapsed Expressway. It is a narrow dirt road through a hole in a wall of the Sector 5 Undercity. The road is surrounded on either side by rubble and debris left from the fallen Sector 6 plate fell, as well as crags and limited vegetation. Halfway along the road is a fallen piece of the Sector 6 plate interior, a winding metal tunnel that leads directly to the Collapsed Expressway. Parts of the roads are paved with scrap metal, and there is a pond at the halfway point.
Collapsed expressway[]
The collapsed expressway forms the remains of an expressway tunnel road from fallen Sector 6 plate. It is located close to the Sector 5 slums, and on the way to the Evergreen Park. The expressway can be navigated through its tunnels, wooden ladders, and through old construction technology, the most notable of which are large robot hands. It has become a home for monsters and a hideout for criminals, whose lairs lie in the lower depths of the expressway ruins, and have graffiti across the walls.
Evergreen Park[]
The Evergreen Park is the site of a playground close to the gate to the Sector 7 Undercity through a wall between the sectors. The playground, frequented by Aerith, has a swing, slide, and tunnel beneath a small climbing frame connected to the S7-6 Service Tunnel to Sector 7. It is located in front of a gate from the Sector 7 Undercity as well as a path to the S7-6 Road to Wall Market. In contrast to its name, the park is mostly concrete and seems to have few visitors.
Following the collapse of Sector 7, the area becomes strewn with rubble. Refugees from Sector 7 took temporary refuge in the park the following day, clearing enough rubble to make the park navigable again.
S7-6 Road[]
The S7-6 Road leads from Wall Market's south entrance to the gate to the Sector 7 Undercity, creating a path directly from the Evergreen Park to Wall Market. In Final Fantasy VII, this is a very short street with shanty houses either side.
In Final Fantasy VII Remake, the road leads along crags and debris, much like the S6-5 Road, though it is a little cleaner, with metal barricades hold up either side of the road, and banners with advertisements for Wall Market's attractions seen on the way. At the road's end by Wall Market is the headquarters for Sam's Delivery Service, ran by Chocobo Sam. The road is paved with scrap metal. After the collapse of Sector 7, the end of the road is strewn with rubble from the nearby plate's collapse.
Wall Market[]
The most notable point of interest in the Sector 6 slums, Wall Market is an entertainment quarter and a shopping center that is walled in on all sides, ran by Don Corneo and his subordinates. The market is home to the Honeybee Inn, Corneo's mansion, as well as many attractions including diners, a boutique, a gym, and stores.
Urban advancement district[]
An area extending out from Wall Market from a road between the Colosseum and Corneo's Mansion to the border wall with Sector 7, it was a Shinra construction project that was abandoned halfway through. It gives access to the sewers.
Sewers[]
The sewers of Sector 6 are located beneath Wall Market, and connect Sector 6 to the train graveyard of the Sector 7 slums.
Society[]
The Sector 6 slums is sparsely populated. Most of its residents simply live near Wall Market, which was spared from the plate collapse.[2] However, very few people live within Wall Market itself.[12]
Gameplay[]
Final Fantasy VII[]
Sector 6 is first visited by a party of Cloud and Aeris during "The Woman at the Church" as they travel through the sector in order to return Cloud to Sector 7. It is later revisited in "Aeris's Secret" by a party of Cloud, Barret, and Tifa while they travel through to Aerith's house in Sector 5.
The map comprises only three screens: the collapsed expressway linked to the Sector 5 Slum, the Evergreen Park, and a road from the park on the way to Wall Market, the main attraction of Sector 6. Enemies are fought in the collapsed expressway in the form of the Whole Eater and Hell House, but the map itself has little that is noteworthy.
Final Fantasy VII Remake[]
The Sector 6 Slums has a similar role: it is visited by a party of Cloud Strife and Aerith Gainsborough during Chapter 9, "The Town That Never Sleeps," as Aerith escorts Cloud to Sector 7, and later revisited by a party of Cloud Strife, Tifa Lockhart, and Barret Wallace in Chapter 13, "A Broken World," as they travel to Aerith's house. Sidequests also take place through the Sector 6 Slums in Chapter 8 as well as Chapter 14, "In Search of Hope."
The Sector 6 Slums is greatly expanded in Final Fantasy VII Remake. Where the Collapsed Expressway was once the only road from Sector 5 to the Evergreen Park, a new road simply named the S6-5 road connects Sector 5 directly to Wall Market, and the Collapsed Expressway is a detour from this road that bypasses Wall Market to lead straight to the Evergreen Park. The Collapsed Expressway is also greatly expanded in length, includes a minigame in which the robot arm must be operated to move Aerith to reach higher places, and has different enemies fought there, both monsters and also bandits, and the playground in the Evergreen Park can be interacted with.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-[]
Sector 6 is first visited in chapter 4 during the story. It can be returned to in chapter 5 and chapter 7 for a number of sidequests.
One sidequest in Sector 6 is the Wutai spy sidequest, where Zack finds the final spy in the Evergreen Park. Zack can also find a member of Sephiroth's fan club, the Silver Elite, at the park. The bigger sidequest is building parts for Aerith's flower cart, where Aerith with sell flowers in the park after Zack finds the parts to build the cart.
The Sec.6 Accessory Shop for the game's shop is available after completing "M6-2-6: Underground City".
Behind the scenes[]
Pre-release shots of Final Fantasy VII show an area that is darkened in the final game.[13]
In Final Fantasy VII, the reason for the lack of a Sector 6 plate was never explained in the game. As such, when developers put Midgar's timeline together for Final Fantasy VII Remake, they used "place collapses during construction" as a placeholder explanation. This became the official reason in the end.[3]
In Final Fantasy VII Remake, the Sector 5 slums are directly connected with the Sector 6 slums, and it's possible to freely move between them, making the complete map seem much smaller than Midgar's size would suggest. The upper plate is not scaled to reflect this, placing both the Sector 5 and 6 slums under the same plate: the broken down Sector 6. This is especially noticeable by looking at the sector's pillar outside the Sector 5 slums church; the pillar is only visible from Sector 5, but it disappears from view if the player goes to Sector 6.
In Japanese hanakotoba, six is considered a somewhat unfortunate number for many reasons. In Buddhism, six refers to the six realms one can reincarnate into by their untouched and unenlightened karma, and in this case represents earthly sensations, the mundane, and the downtrodden aspects of reality. Six is also considered an unlucky number to be used at places of transport like airports and bus terminals or large gatherings like stadiums, as when used in its counting name muttsu, can mean mu or nothingness, which can mean "(to be stranded in) the middle of nowhere". As one of the glaringly unsightful sectors of Midgar, Sector 6 in this instance can highlight the worst aspects of the city and the shortcomings of human fault.
