The Leaf House, originally known as the Sector 5 Undercity Juvenile Care Facility and colloquially known as the Sector 5 House, is a location in Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. An orphanage in the Sector 5 slums of Midgar, the Leaf House teaches and raises orphans found throughout the slums. Despite a shady past and reputation, it was eventually taken over and became a force for good.
History[]
As the Sector 5 Undercity Juvenile Care Facility, the owner was a trafficker who cut deals with businesses in the slums so that children who were old enough to move out were sold into lives of hard labor. This was done beneath the notice of the children or the teachers and staff, though the facility had a bad reputation regardless.[1] Aerith Gainsborough's first job was to work as an assistant at the house;[2] when she first arrived in Sector 5, Elmyra Gainsborough commented that she would have been welcome there, but opted not to put them there as the house was believed to have ties to the Shinra Electric Power Company.[3]
Biggs, who went by the name "X", was one of the children in the orphanage. Biggs saved up every gil he ever made eventually bought out the orphanage, turning it to the Leaf House. After purchasing it, Biggs continued to volunteer around the orphanage.[1]
Aerith would sometimes deliver flowers to the house. In "Budding Bodyguard" in Final Fantasy VII Remake, Aerith took Cloud Strife to the house and had him deliver flowers with him. Cloud also visited the hideout of the Leaf House children located near the south part of the slums' center district.
Characteristics[]
The Leaf House is staffed by a number of teachers (including Ms. Folia) and staff, and looked after by the Housemother. It is funded by donations, among whom were from Meguro of the Gainsborough family business[4] and Mireille.[5] In return for their donations, children pick up litter, run errands, and go out on patrols for the slums.[6]
It was customary for children living in the house to begin working in the neighborhood at thirteen years old. Some of the children left the orphanage as young as 13 to pursue jobs; a child named Yoko left renting an old home with friends selling handmade accessories around the slums, while Biggs and a child named Jean worked in a scrapyard salvaging and selling machine parts for repairs.[2]
Gameplay[]
The Leaf House is a location in a number of quests in Final Fantasy VII Remake. In "Budding Bodyguard", the location is visited in the main scenario quests "To Aerith's House" and "Leaf House Delivery"; during the second, based on the player's choices of flower colors, the children will arrange them in either a chocobo, moogle, or Cactuar pattern. The Leaf House children are also seen in a number of quests during the chapter. In later chapters, the Leaf House can be seen, but has a more minor role.
