I'll sell my soul for the sake of winning. I found a new ego—way to fight.

— Isagi discovers a new ego[1]

Yoichi Isagi ( (いさぎ) () (いち) Isagi Yoichi?) is the main protagonist of the Blue Lock series.

Isagi is a second-year high school student from Saitama who initially played as a forward in high school. Unlike his fellow competitors, who were scouted by Anri Teieri, Isagi was chosen personally by Jinpachi Ego himself after seeing him play. Isagi's main goal is to become the world's best striker.

After surviving the many trials and tribulations of Blue Lock, Isagi is ranked #1 in the program alongside Rin Itoshi and is seen as one of the most exciting talents in football with an offer from Bastard München at the end of the Neo Egoist League.

Isagi is a player who is wholeheartedly focused on being the best player on the field in every game. He doesn't care if he has to do things himself, urge his teammates to help him, take advantage of the ever-shifting feelings and emotions on the field, or completely set aside his pride and emotions to be a logical and efficient football machine that exists solely to win, ideally by scoring goals.

Following the end of the Neo Egoist League, Isagi has qualified to become one of the 23 players for the new Japan U-20 team entering the upcoming PIFA U-20 World Cup.

Appearance[]

Isagi is a teenager of slightly above average height and slim build, developing a stronger, more defined-looking physique. He has short, dark blue hair that leaves a V-shaped fringe between his deep blue eyes, along with a plant shaped ahoge at the top of his head.

While attending Ichinan High School, he wore an unbuttoned blazer over a white undershirt and striped tie. Both the Ichinan High jersey and gym uniform are light-colored with black stripes.

At Blue Lock, Isagi wears the standard-issued body suit (black with blue stripes) and tracksuit. During the First Selection, he wore Team Z's blue #11 jersey and Team Z's gray-capped cleats. During Second Selection, he wore Team White's #15 jersey and later switched to red. He then later switched to Team A's black #15 jersey during the Blue Lock Eleven tryouts.

Isagi dons an official blue-colored Blue Lock player uniform with the #11, that looks very similar to the ones seen in the first cover spread minus the Japan flag during the Japan U-20 match.

As a regular for Team Germany, Isagi wears the red and black with gold stripes Bastard München uniform as #11.

Personality[]

Isagi is easygoing and has a generally friendly, cheery personality, but his simple and innocent habits often get on the nerves of the people around him. He tends to avoid any childish squabbles among other Blue Lock competitors and tries to be a peacekeeper between his friends and rivals. At the beginning of Blue Lock, Isagi is massively unsure of himself and his skill due to being the second-lowest-ranked player in Blue Lock initially and his conflicting ideas of football. As time goes on, Isagi develops a more assertive presence on and off the field, becoming the foundation for Team Z and garnering the respect of some of the best players in Blue Lock, who mostly have heavily assertive or dominant personalities. As of Third Selection, Isagi has the confidence, charisma, and reputation to talk openly with Rin Itoshi, one of the most talented yet difficult people in the Blue Lock Project.

Initially, Isagi was unsure on how to proceed in Blue Lock due to being taught an ideology during his time in high school that conflicted with what was being promoted in Blue Lock, as well as being unsure on how to be egotistic. However, starting with Team Z's first win and subsequent wins thereafter, Isagi becomes well-acquainted with the rush of victory and the cold ruthlessness needed to survive in Blue Lock. As times goes on, he becomes willing to step on the plans and dreams of his opponents and teammates in order to score a goal and go further in Blue Lock. When it comes to football, he is ambitious and calculated, willing to change and adapt, to get the right "chemical reactions" out of his teammates, to stay a step ahead of their opponents, and be the best player on the field, staying true to his commitment to becoming the world's best striker. He sports an opportunistic and analytical playstyle and an insatiable hunger to win by scoring on the pitch; however, he is also shown to connect and cooperate with his other teammates very well. Importantly, Isagi has often valued and recognized the strengths of others' play, but as he proceeds through Blue Lock, he is able to identify and harness his own strengths to score.

Ever since meeting and losing to Rin, Isagi has been chasing him, attempting to surpass him at every turn. He goes out of his way to get closer to Rin, attempting to copy his cooldown routines and adapting his mindset in an attempt to get closer to his level. Isagi believes that when he is able to truly surpass Rin, he will be closer than ever to his goal of becoming the best striker in the world. Isagi is still prone to being nervous before big matches, such as the end of the First Selection, the beginning of the Third Selection, or the Japan U-20 match, and was slightly nervous while being interviewed after his decisive goal. However, in each case, Isagi was able to fully realize his ego and confidently stake his place among the best in Blue Lock, declaring that he would lead the Japan U-20 to victory in the World Cup. Isagi now doesn't like it when someone believes that his successes are just out of luck and not because of his skills as a striker. When he meets Tada, an old teammate from his school, and comments how "lucky" he was to score that goal in the match against Japan U-20, Isagi feels dismayed since Tada had absolutely no idea how much he had to fight every day inside of Blue Lock to get in the position he is currently, yet it does not dismay him for long as it motivates him into returning to Blue Lock and evolving even more.

After the beginning of the Neo Egoist League, Isagi's ego is much more noticeable than before, feeling completely insulted when Yukimiya questioned his decision to make a pass, calling him someone with a small way of thinking. The conversation enraged Isagi and provoked him to the point of almost getting into a fight with Yukimiya inside of the dressing room. He is also entirely capable of showing frustration when things don't go like he planned; in the Bastard München vs. Manshine City match, he is frustrated and enraged when Kunigami took advantage of his misfired shot due to Kaiser, and even more when Kaiser makes fun of him, saying that he likes making passes to goal instead of making scoring goals himself, not caring anymore about showing his egoism. According to Noel Noa, Isagi has an almost identical perspective on football as Ego, as they both share a mutual obsessive desire to win; he has even begun to exhibit a similar devilish smile on his face like Ego's whenever he's pumped up.

In the final match against Paris X Gen, after learning that Noa has been using him as a stepping stone for Kaiser from the very beginning, Isagi discovered an unfamiliar level of rage and frustration within himself. As a result, Isagi discovered a new ego, which relies on him "selling his soul for the sake of winning", he no longer cared about being the star or even being able to surpass "geniuses" in soccer, all that mattered to him was winning at any cost. Earning him the respect of world class strikers like his former idol Noel Noa, who began to see him as a genuine threat and accepted Isagi's grand public challenge to best him in the upcoming PIFA World Cup.

Abilities[]

Archetypes[]

  • Forwards: also known as strikers, have the main objective of scoring goals. They are often the players who get the most attention since their role is designed to be in a scoring position. They also take part in penalty kicks and corner kicks when the opposing team kicks the ball out-of-bounds. They are normally the players in charge of starting off the game at the start and halftime.
  • Raumdeuter: The word essentially translates to "space investigator" and is best used to define the effective role when exploiting the half space. A Raumdeuter's main function is to drift infield and find pockets of space in which to thrive; it is essentially a player who locates dangerous areas of the pitch and uses unoccupied space to create confusion among opposition backlines. They are limited dribblers and are not characterized by their pace. Their first touch is very efficient and is a huge contributor to their set-up touches prior to scoring.

Isagi creates ideal plays and chance opportunities by using his spatial awareness to view the field as a whole and the players on it. With his understanding of all the players, he uses his off-the-ball movements to occupy empty spaces or create dangerous ones to form ideal plays for his teammates, chance opportunities using his teammates, and to score high-level goals for himself. With his reflex and enhanced vision, Isagi is able to create plays only possible for himself. Due to his relationships and game time with most of the prominent Blue Lock players, Isagi is able to bring the best out of his teammates by either forcing them to perform plays so he can attack or by pushing themselves to exceed Isagi's evolving skill. By the time of the Neo Egoist League, players are willing to follow or use as a guide Isagi's style of play, cementing his place at the top of Blue Lock. He has been noted to be the heart of Blue Lock by Sae Itoshi and implied to be that by Ego. A majority of Blue Lock and the world as a whole highly recognize and respect his skills; even Jinpachi Ego comments publicly on his ability, while Noel Noa recognizes him as a threat to his current position as the world's best striker.

Skills[]

  • Spatial Awareness: Isagi instinctively begins to analyze the entire field, giving him a vast understanding of the game, including his opponents and teammates' weapons. Based on this understanding, Isagi can make accurate predictions as to the flow of the game. These premonitions then allow him to envision an ideal play midgame and execute it efficiently even when faced with strong opposition and an unpredictable field. His spatial awareness is among the highest in Blue Lock, often rivaling and sometimes surpassing other player's own visions, such as those of Niko and Rin.
    • Goal Scent: Using his spatial awareness, Isagi instinctively recognizes the "scent of a goal" that is emitted off of key players from his prediction and is able to expertly send them the ball so they may score.
  • Metavision (超越視界 (メタ・ビジョン) Meta Bijon?, Transcendence Sight): A term used to describe a player's evolved vision that gives them an omnipotent perspective of the field.
Using his eyes to constantly take in information from his central and peripheral vision, Isagi constantly collects data on every player, every play they make, and their positions on the field. After analyzing Michael Kaiser's goal formula, Isagi adopted Kaiser's transcendent use of his vision into his own style of play. Mixed with his spatial awareness, positioning, and reflex, Isagi is able to swiftly predict and shut down the plays of some of the best players in Blue Lock and even one of the best strikers in the world and further create ideal situations for his own goals using his teammates in a way that is only possible for him.
    • Meta-Burst Point: Using his Metavision, Isagi is able to pinpoint the most critical point in the enemy's play and move in to steal the ball or stop the ball at the last second. He used this skill to great effect in the game against Manshine City.
  • Egocentrism: Isagi is able to utilize his Metavision to read and understand the motivations or "protagonism" behind people's play styles and use that understanding to further create opportunities for himself and his own team by denying the opposite team's players crucial plays that they attempt to make. Through this, Isagi is capable of anticipating, defending against, and shutting down critical, illogical, as well as even "miracle" plays that would normally be considered irrational, unpredictable, and unstoppable.
  • Direct Shot (直撃蹴弾 (ダイレクトシュート) Dairekuto Shūto?, Direct Shoot): To perform a direct shot or volley, Isagi first assesses the positions of defenders and the trajectory of the ball, then lands a powerful kick on the ball's impact point in order to score a clean goal. In doing this, Isagi avoids having to overthink his positioning and next move and can just score a clean shot with no interference. Nagi noted that Isagi has no wasted motion when performing his shot, implying that Isagi performs it with flawless technique and control.
    • Back Heel Shot: Isagi first assesses the positions of defenders and feints a direct shot in anticipation for his opponent's block. Then he lands a powerful backwards kick on the ball's impact point in order to score a clean shot. This move was first used against Rin Itoshi during their rematch in the Second Selection, which surprised everyone at first sight.
    • Lefty Direct Shot: Acting as a supplement or "side weapon" to his right-footed direct shot, Isagi is able to perform a left-footed direct shot when his dominant right side is blocked that is strong yet not as powerful as his right-footed direct shot.
    • 2-Stage Lefty Direct Shot: Isagi assesses the positions of defenders and feints a direct shot with his right foot, in anticipation of his shot being blocked, then proceeds to tap the ball into the air and to the side instead, to further create sufficient space to shoot freely, a lefty direct shot.
    • Two-Gun Volley: Isagi's "Ultimate", which he invented during the Bastard München Vs. PXG match. An ambidextrous mid-air quickdraw that got inspiration from Nagi's Juggling Shot. Isagi gets into a shooting position using one foot but fakes the shot by moving his foot over the ball midair. He then jumps and quickly performs a jumping volley with the other foot into the goal, effectively combining both his left- and right-footed shooting. Hiori has called the shot "unstoppable" since no matter which defender comes in to block his shot, Isagi can fake them in midair and shoot after he destroys their timing. Plus, the goalkeeper will have a hard time timing his shot. Isagi again attempted this shot later in the game but it was blocked by Karasu, who gained metavision. He used it one more time during the climax of the match, and successfully scored the winning point, right after intercepting a drive pass from Ness.
  • Off-the-Ball Movements: A term used to describe the moments where players are not in possession of the ball.
Isagi may use these moments to position himself in his opponents' blind spots, position himself in a place where he can deceive the opposition and be a decoy for his teammates shots, or to position himself close enough to a teammate to pull off super close back-to-back passing that can break through an enemy's defense.
  • Adaptability: Isagi is genuinely good at adaptability. He can use his weapons in the way that benefits him the most on the field to gain advantage for himself.
  • Positioning: Mirroring Rin, Isagi is able to use his positioning to exploit luck during a game. If he realizes the ball will not be passed to him, Isagi will move to an opportune location, where he is in the blind spot of his opponent and where he would be able to score directly off of a direct shot. He used this to score the decisive goal in the match against the U-20.
    • Side Step Diagonal Run: While two defenders confront him, Isagi throws off both of their timing by faking going either left or right, and then runs through the gap between them he created.
  • Reflex (反射的 Hanshateki?): Isagi, as of the match against the Japan U-20, has begun to consciously incorporate reflex into his playmaking. Isagi is able to use his awareness of the conditions of the field to find spaces of opportunity, either to attack the opponent's goal or defend his own. He used this to instinctively move to a position where he could use a Direct Shot. After passing to Nagi, he used this to read Sae's corner kick by taking into account Sae's pass as well as Rin's and Shido's positioning, and he also demonstrated this ability at the end of the Japan U-20 match when he by reflex moved to the ball while in the blind spots of the Japan U-20 defense, scoring a powerful direct shot.
  • Flow State: Flow, as Ego describes it, is the state of "total immersion" or "being in the zone." It is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Isagi's Flow state involves Isagi constantly using all of his weapons at once to read the field and the distortions caused by the players on it. With his Metavision, he complexly reads the field and identifies player motivations and distortions, then takes advantage of these with his spatial awareness and reflex and either mounts a surprise ironclad defense or a swift and unstoppable attack using his positioning and one-touch passing. Isagi has unintentionally entered Flow State numerous times during Blue Lock, even as early as the First Selection, though his most impressive feat was entering Flow during Bastard München's game against Manshine City, taking control of the field and directly leading his team to a goal twice.

  • (To himself) "I didn't come to trample on others to become the best in the world!! I came here, so, I need to defeat those who are stronger than me! Or else, nothing will change!!"[13]
  • (To himself) "Inside of me? I wanna know more! What my monster really is. That could be my one clue to surviving inside Blue Lock."[12]

  • (To Baro) "No matter how much you try to understand other people's hearts, people aren't able to change others!! Every time, you have to change yourself. In order to change the world if nothing is going how you want to — that's surely the only way!! If I can't understand something clearly at last leading to a goal, I have to become that light. Watch, Baro!! This is me 'adapting' to you!! The darkness that you created on this field, I'll devour it and turn it into light."[25]

  • (To himself) "I can't become the best striker in the world that way!! I wanna win against Rin on my own!!"[28]
  • (To himself) "The difference between me and Rin is the difference in our resolve to accept. I sure am lame. I thought I'd finally reached Rin. No, I even thought I'd won against him. I lost to him and was just picked to go on! I have to accept that reality!! Otherwise, there won't be a next time. I have to incorporate that piece called 'Luck' in my thought process. I have to update my understanding on a fundamental level!! In order to win against Rin, I have to become a newer version of myself!!"[29]
  • (To Ego) "Who the heck cares about that? I don't give a chit. Not about the future of Japanese Football nor about some safe future for me. What I want—what we want—is to win this game."[30]
  • (To Nagi) "Your creativity is no more than play pretend to me, Nagi."[31]
  • (To Nagi and Reo) "There's no value in success if you can't reproduce it. I'll crush you. In this match, there won't be anymore miracles for you two."[32]
  • (To Igarashi) "Pursuing your goals to the fullest. That's the foundation of our ego. An ego that is unique only to you."[33]
  • (To Noa) "I'll do it—create a theory to surpass you. Remain the best in the world and wait for me, Noa. The next World Cup will be mine."
  • (To Loki) "Shut it. You're the one who lost—Loki, your visualization of the future where Rin scored—Kaiser, and I smashed it apart. Be a man and admit you lost. You're awfully full of yourself for someone who just happened to be born fast."
