2014

Hazlewood's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[9]

  • Immigration: – I support legal immigration but call for an immigration process that is fair, clear, and efficient. The current system is unfair to immigrants like my daughter-in-law and her family who had to endure a lengthy and costly legal process to emigrate from Canada to the United States. I also support the requirement for employers to confirm a person’s work eligibility using the E-Verify system, and I oppose taxpayer-funded programs that serve illegal residents in Tennessee.
  • Abortion: – I support the sanctity of life, and I oppose abortion on demand. I support and will be voting for Amendment 1 on the November ballot to amend Tennessee’s constitution.
  • Marriage: – I believe in the Biblical definition of marriage and agree with the majority of Tennesseans who in 2006 voted for our state’s constitution to reflect the traditional definition of marriage.
  • Guns: – I support the Second Amendment and the right of our citizens to bear arms. Reason must be applied in balancing the rights of property owners and the rights of gun owners, which are at times conflicting.
  • State’s Rights: – The best government is closest to the people. The federal government should honor states’ sovereignty laid out in the Tenth Amendment by dissolving unfunded federal mandates and by awarding block grants to fund education, TennCare, infrastructure projects and the like, as Tennesseans see fit.
  • Jobs & Economic Development: – Government does not create jobs. The legislature, however, does have a duty to create a business-friendly climate that will attract new industry opportunities to the state. With this goal in mind, the Tennessee government must prioritize an educated workforce, community safety, and a regulatory environment that does not penalize workers, investors, and those who save for the future.
  • Expansion of ObamaCare: –I oppose the implementation of ObamaCare and the federal expansion of TennCare. Applying non-recurring funding to recurring costs is irresponsible and inevitably disastrous. There must be a market-driven solution for healthcare.
  • Education: – One of Tennessee’s largest expenditures is education. I support educational spending that makes its way directly into the classroom to assist teachers, students, and parents. Also, I believe education should be an issue driven by local control, namely the local school boards and parents. The best schools have high parental involvement, and I am excited about the recent initiative aimed at mobilizing parents and the public in our local schools.[10]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Tennessee

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
