Expand all | Collapse all

Middle Tennessee native Matt Ferry is a Multimedia Specialist who has been active with dozens of organizations who advocate for healthcare rights, worker's rights, and environmental & economic justice.

From 2017-2019, Matt was Chair of the Rutherford County Democratic Party where he helped recruit, train, and provide assistance to dozens of new candidates. During this time, he oversaw the largest expansion of volunteer mobilization and fundraising efforts the local party had experienced in years.

In 2018, Matt Ferry ran for Tennessee House of Representatives in District 48, on a platform of Expanding Medicaid and Healthcare for all Tennesseans, Fully Funding Public School System, and Fighting for Clean Air and Water.

  • State leadership failed to craft any meaninful legislation that would protect Tennesseans during COVID-19 pandemic.
  • No relief bills passed. No bills to improve Testing and Contract Testing. No real bills to combat pandemic. The storm is raging but the State sits on a Billion Dollar "Rainy Day Fund."
  • We need also legislation designed to help struggling small businesses and to fund the badly underfunded state unemployement system. The storm is not passing anytime soon.

The Pandemic has highlighted the cracks in our fragile economic system.

During this pandemic, we have seen a lot of folks sacrifice to make ends meet, but we do not see the same kind of sacrifices from some multi million dollar industries like the big healthcare companies in Nashville that, despite the slowdown, are seeing a huge windfall of money due to relief funds passed by Congress. Our small business did not see the same kind of money come their way, they were cut out each time.

While some folks are able to draw a nice paycheck from home; lots of other folks are being forced back to an unsafe work environment with no hazard pay or even paid sick leave, while drawing a meager paycheck.

Bottom line: It is time to invest more in our communities that have been underfunded for years. While the wages for most workers have remained stagnant since the 1970's, the price of everything including healthcare, housing, higher education, and more has skyrocketed. If we want decrease poverty and crime, we need to make substantial investments designed to improve the lives of every Tennessean, not just the privileged few.
