Candidate Connection

Mark Cagle participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 19, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Mark Cagle's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Healthcare, Public Safety and Broadband for rural areas[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Safety for all Tennesseans. Tougher on criminalsCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Mark Cagle answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

Franklin D. Roosevelt . The man that looked out for the old and poor with government programs that are still here today. Social Security being the biggest.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
U.S. Constitution. Our founding fathers seem to have had a good insight of how great this country was going to be and they prepared us on how to get there.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty and Respect[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Compassion and Determination[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Serve the people not outside interest.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A man that loved everyone. Discrimination has no place in America period![3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
Moon landing. Remember sitting in front of a big square box with legs called a TV in total awe.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Gosh. many jobs starting as a young boy maybe 8. Lawn cutting, Shining shoes at the barbershop, selling Christmas cards and flower or vegetables seeds. At 14 fulltime dishwasher and attending school. Full Time worker ever since.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
On 1st date with future wife, left my ATM card at home 20 miles away.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
4th of July. America's birthday and summertime fun[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
I have read many books but the one with strongest impact would be the bible. I wanted to go into the ministry at one time. The teachings of Jesus taught me to love everyone and not to hate.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Superman. Fly anywhere and to fight crime or evil.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Pets. They give me a warm greeting everytime no matter my mood.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Hold my Hand. Hootie and the Blowfish[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Life itself. You learn real quick that it is on you where you go in life. My Mom seem to be the prime example of that after our father died. She had 5 kids , no job and not much help. Our church helped briefly, but surprisingly stopped after she was sexually assaulted by a deacon in our church. There was no such thing as GO FUND ME or ME TOO back then. She raised us on waitress pay and taught us to work.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
Senate seems to have more power and 4 year terms not 2 year terms that state representatives have.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. But I do believe American History and Civics should be taught in Jr High to learn some insight on how the government works and inspire the kids to get involved.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Many problems. Tax Revenue is drying up from mismanagement. Schools ,quality of education is declining because Teachers are abused and disrespected and low pay, they are more like referees with defiant students and non involved parents. Violent Criminals are getting out to early and are repeating the crimes over again. revolving doors has to stop.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
Everyone working for the Citizens not the lobbyist.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Most definitely. We got to work together for good solutions for our State.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Simple. draw the districts up seperately 1 district by republicans and 1 district by democrats. Put it in a hat and let someone draw the winning district. Stop the back and forth time wasting crap. No one wins in court battles but lawyers.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Any committee that can get real results. Don't want to be there to collect a check and to eat.[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Ned McWherter. He seemed to really have cared for Tennesseans. I didn't vote for him and I told him so but I did tell him I liked the work he was doing for us at a dinner honoring our Great Mayor Sam Ridley.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
Yes I would like to be a Governor one day.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Sadly most people state that they don't even know who their Representative is. I plan to change that if I win.[3]
