The Maine State Auditor is a statutory state executive position in the Maine state government. The auditor is in charge of examining all state financial records and reporting the findings to the Legislature.[1]

The current Maine State Auditor is Matthew Dunlap (nonpartisan). Dunlap assumed office in 2022.

Authority

The office of state auditor is established by Title 5, Chapter 11 of the Maine Statutes. §241 reads states, "The State Auditor shall be the head of the Department of Audit, as heretofore established."[1]

Qualifications

§241 of Title 5, Part 1, Chapter 11 of the Maine Statutes establishes the qualifications of office: "He shall be a certified public accountant or a college graduate with not less than 6 years of experience as a professional accountant or auditor, including not less than 5 years of auditing experience, of which not less than 4 years shall have been in a supervisory capacity."[1]

The state auditor is elected every four years by secret ballot of the legislature. It is one of the first tasks of each newly-sworn in legislature.[2]
