Campaign themes
2014
Holmes' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[11]
- Job Creation
- Excerpt: "Job creation and encouraging businesses to make their home in Illinois has always been one of my top priorities. New businesses in Illinois strengthen the workforce. Illinois is confronted with the challenge of needing to increase revenue in order to maintain needed services in the state. Creating jobs that allow the people of Illinois to raise a family, buy a home and provide a good education for their children is also beneficial for the state. Since my decision to run for public office, passing a substantial capital bill has always been my top priority. I voted to support a comprehensive capital plan in the legislature this year that will provide over $31 billion to update the state's infrastructure and expand current capital developments. It will also create hundreds of thousands of new jobs for our residents"
- Healthcare Access
- Excerpt: "Access to quality healthcare in Illinois is a top quality of life issue for Illinoisans. We need to ensure that residents are able to locate and receive top notch medical care regardless of where they live or their economic situation. With an aging population and higher incidence of diseases such as Autism, we need to explore options in order to comprehensively address healthcare in the state. "
- Environment
- Excerpt: "The current buzz words with respect to the environment these days is "going green." As a lifetime Sierra Club member I enthusiastically applaud the green movement. Being environmentally friendly benefits much more than the enviroment [sic]. Negative health impacts are reduced (air quality as we reduce emissions) and other hazards are virtually eliminated (lead in paint, arsenic in treated lumber and mercury in thermometers) New jobs are created. In fact, entire new industries as we embark on green building and green remodeling practices. I have been a trong [sic] proponent of protecting and enhancing our environment since I was elected and have sponsored several pieces of legislation to that effect."
- Vetrans
- Excerpt: "It is imperative we do right by the brave men and women who are willing to sacrafice [sic] so much for the entire country. They are willing to put their life on hold or even give up their life in order for us to enjoy our freedom. How can we say thank you for that unselfish act? We need to make sure these brave folks know that we acknowledge and appreciate the great gift they are bestowing upon us. I am honored to sit on the State Government and Veteran's Affairs Committee and have sponsored and enthusiastically endorsed legislation in Illinois on behalf of our veterans."
2012
Holmes' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[12]
- Finances and jobs
- Excerpt: "Linda Holmes knows that we need to get Illinois' finances in order. She passed legislation that would update the state’s outdated financial reporting systems, which currently jeopardize Illinois' ability to receive much-needed federal funds and potentially hurt the state’s bond rating."
- Local Schools
- Excerpt: "She sponsored a bill that creates a farm-to-school database to facilitate the purchase of fresh produce and food products of schools and encourages school districts to buy locally-grown products. Senator Holmes has worked hard to improve education and supported important legislation, like Senate Bill 7, to become a law. This law reforms teacher hiring and tenure practices in order to ensure that good teachers stay in our classrooms and that they are not unfairly fired."
- Protecting Our Children
- Excerpt: "As State Senator, Linda sponsored a law to fight underage drinking and driving by taking away the driver's license of underage drinkers and requiring safety education classes to include information on the consequences of drinking and driving."
- Healthcare
- Excerpt: "Linda believes that every person has a right to affordable and accessible health care. In Springfield she has voted to increase funding for prescription drug coverage and to include diseases like Autism and MS."
- Veterans
- Excerpt: "Linda has worked to ensure our brave service men and women are taken care of when they return from fighting overseas."
Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
