Noteworthy events
Charged with federal bribery (2022)
On September 20, 2022, Jones was charged with federal bribery related with the use of red-light cameras in Chicago. Jones allegedly sought $5,000 to exclude some Chicago suburbs from a study of red-light cameras. Jones was also charged with making the arrangements through interstate commerce and lying to federal agents.[13][14]
Gov. J.B. Pritzker (D) called for Jones' resignation on September 22. Following the charges, Jones gave up his leadership positions in the Senate.[14]
On September 23, Jones pleaded not guilty and waived his right to be indicted by a grand jury.
