James Donato is federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. Prior to joining the court Donato was a litigation partner in the San Francisco office of Shearman & Sterling LLP. In June of 2013, President Obama nominated James Donato for a seat on the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.[1] Donato was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 25, 2014 on a vote of 90-5.[2]
Early life and education
Donato earned his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, graduating in 1983. He went on to earn his A.M. from Harvard University in 1984 and his J.D. from Stanford Law School in 1988.[1]

On June 20, 2013, President Obama nominated James Donato to the United States District Court for the Northern District of California to fill the vacancy left by James Ware.[3] Obama commented on the nomination, stating:
“ | I am pleased to nominate these distinguished individuals to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident they will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice.[1][4] | ” |

Donato's nomination was returned by the Senate on January 3, 2014 and he was renominated on January 6th by President Obama.[6]
Donato's nomination was reported to the full Senate on January 16, 204 after a voice vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee.[7] Donato was confirmed by the Senate on February 25, 2014 on a vote of 90-5.[2]
