Campaign themes

McArthur answered the following about her campaign in a July 2014 interview with the Columbia Daily Herald:[2]

How would you characterize the current relationship between school board and county commission? What would you do to maintain or change it?
Currently, both groups appear to not be in agreement on school needs, particularly Central High School. As a board member, I would advocate removing politics from this issue, work to come to a solution, and actively participate in public discussions on what is the best option.

What do you believe is he most pressing issue facing the school board and how would you address it?
Central High School and school maintenance need immediate attention. I would encourage serious dialogue on solutions as well as funding for on-going school repairs. School Board meetings are the place to hold such discussions in public, and I would encourage the public’s comments.

How effective do you believe Eddie Hickman has been as the schools director? Explain.
The buck stops with the director. His view that the system is “holding its own” is not good enough for the students of Maury County. Test scores, graduation rates, and over-all morale in our system need improvement. It’s his job and clearly, there is need for leadership from the director. [3]
