Campaign themes

Powers answered the following about her campaign in a July 2014 interview with the Columbia Daily Herald:[1]

How would you characterize the current relationship between school board and county commission? What would you do to maintain or change it?
I perceive the current relationship to be strained. I will encourage relationship building and teamwork between the school board and the county commission in order to get things accomplished. I will seek value in compromises in some circumstances in order for progress to be made.

What do you believe is he most pressing issue facing the school board and how would you address it?
I believe the most pressing issue of the school board is the aging facilities. Central High School needs an update, or a new school may need to be constructed. However, many of our schools need updating so that our children have a safe and productive environment for learning.

How effective do you believe Eddie Hickman has been as the schools director? Explain.
Eddie Hickman has been effective, but current leadership needs to have a plan to improve schools and make our community one of the best in Tennessee. Maury County is a dynamic community which should expect extraordinary leadership as we strive for excellence. Excellence in education will benefit our entire community. [2]
