A few obvious conclusions are that SLC SSDs are priced roughly the same as memory. In a sense SLC SSDs are better than memory since they are persistent, but if keeping all your data in memory sounds expensive then so will SLCs. And in any case you canât eliminate memory caching entirely as at least some part of the index likely needs to reside in memory even with the faster access times SSDs provi

[ 2010-September-03 10:04 ] I have been testing one of Intel's "consumer" SSD (X25-M G2) to see if it stores data durably, meaning that if the disk claims the data has been written, it actually survives a power failure. This is important because you want your airline ticket to stay purchased after your buy it, even if the system crashes. The conclusion is that this SSD can lose data in power failu
I wrote about FlashCache there, and since that I run couple benchmarks, to see what performance benefits we can expect. For initial tries I took sysbench oltp tests ( read-only and read-write) and case when data fully fits into L2 cache. I made binaries for FlashCache for CentOS 5.4, kernel 2.6.18-164.15, you can download it from our testing stage. It took some efforts to make binary, you may get

This is the second in a series of posts from the Last.fm engineering team covering the geekier aspects of our recent Last.fm on Xbox LIVE launch. Part one (âThe War Roomâ) is here. The music streaming architecture at Last.fm is an area of our infrastructure that has been scaling steadily for some time. The final stage of delivering streams to users fetches the raw mp3 data from a MogileFS distribu

Fusion-io vs Intel X25-M SSD RAID, Grudge Match Review Disruptive technology; it's a term thrown around these days by industry marketing types and quite frankly it's just plain getting worn out as of late. In the mid 90s, a Harvard Business School Professor coined this phrase to describe a product innovation that breaks current convention and exceeds market expectations so vastly that market lead
